I know I've beaten this to death in the past, but has anyone had any luck painting and then putting a cover on a metal tube railgun type barrel that lasted. The guns come painted originally so it seems they should be able to be sanded and repainted.

I would imagine auto paint would hold up pretty well. It's all in the prep work.

by prep work you mean the sanding?

I think there power coated. You could easily strip the barrel and get it re coated in almost any color, cant do much detail though. And if you wanted to get all artistic on it maby you could polyurethane over it, but it would be easy to chip and once the salt got in to the alloy it would start oxiding/caroding.

prep with xylene or something similar to strip away all oil/wax

I don't like powder coat because once it chips there's not stopping it. Just strip it down, spray an etching primer on it, paint and finish in a polyurethane clear. If it does chip or scratch you can fix and blend it in the one spot.
