Received from my friend Alexis this pic of an amazing capture made by free-diving off the French Riviera: a "saber fish" (trichiurus)/ poisson sabre.
This usually pretty deep fish was hunting at about 100ft depth...:thumbsup2:
Ever taken this specie?
Ever made this amazing capture?

Very interesting. Here this is called Oarfish, they get big. I've wondered before what it would be like to spear one. Did your friend say what the fish did after being speared?

Creepy fish, not sure I'd shoot one. Somebody shot one on a shore dive in South FL a couple yrs ago.

From Wikipedia:
QuoteAlthough the larger species are considered game fish and are (to a minor extent) fished commercially, oarfish are rarely caught alive; their flesh is not well regarded due to its gelatinous consistency.
They'd be cool to see swimming in the ocean but I probably wouldn't shoot it since they're not really edible.

I wouldn't believe that until I tried it. I've seen books and such listing fish as not being good table fare, yet my experience has been to the contrary.

Must be be beautiful underwater.
Looks like a giant Tahalí (trichiurus lepturus linnaeus)two giant steaks, chips and mojito isleño(garlic, coriander, paprika, salt, pepper, vinegar and olive oil, all crushed), barbecue, cold beer, domino and friends.

did a short dive today with Alex, unfortunetely rough sea and stormy weather...
told me that the fish was pretty weak, spine is tiny and break as soon you'r holding the fish in your hand..
