A tribute to Orky

  • Marineland was like Seaworld. The Orcas Orky & Corky and Bubbles the Pilot Whale were the stars. Growing up in the LA/Orange county area in the 60's & 70"s you would go to Marineland on school field trips or with the family on the weekends. Here's another youtube vid The ruins of Marineland - YouTube

The area is now a resort. I miss the the old days...

  • Why did it close down and why "RIP orky" now?

I remember the marine land theme song from the commercials, living in Canada. I believe marine land Canada is still operating. I have mixed feelings about captive orcas and dolphins.

My wife and I argue about that same topic, I simply say that without captive species educating the public or getting the awwwww vote(right or wrong) many species would fall below the public and media radar and go the way of the DoDo for it is the way of OUR species to exterminate anything that is not forcibly protected... So although I hate intelligent wild animals being caged I applaud it as it has saved many a species and got many people into the water

  • I go crazy without an outlet that allows me to feel without man made boundaries, natural boundaries are ok.. These animals have capabilities which need to be exercised in a similar way, otherwise they live out a miserable existence, so I empathize for the individual animal. The only mitigating factor IMO is that there are individual personalities within a species that lend themselves better to living with boundaries than others, probably the animals they end up with are such. Still it's sad, the animals develop psychological disorders. Sometimes they snap.

  • Agreed Dan, but I dont understand why there is such a huge turnover of animals that they keep taking from the wild stock, nearly all the other captive zoo animals are bred in captivity, this I would find more acceptable as captive born animals only know what they are born into.

  • very cool vids

i agree with you exactly george.
I hate seeing them in "cages" but I love hearing people at the aquarium who have never even imagined that such a creature could exist, and they leave there in love with marine mammals.
