I didn't expect to see that in NY. Actually I don't know what to expect diving NY at all.

Pretty cool
-
used to see them all the time up there when i commercial fished in nj or was out diving up there. stupid fish, i hit one with a boat once when it was sunning itself.
-
You are not the first person who has said they are stupid. Must not have predators. Nothing gets that big being stupid

Amazing fish.
From an evolutionary standpoint, what is the possible advantage in that shape and design? How did that come to be? -
Maybe not looking like anything edible, and no meat to offer predators. To me trigger fish shape and movement looks somewhere between normal fish shape and the Mola.
-
If I had to guess, their evolutionary advantage is to not taste good. They are slow swimming creatures.
On the first dive trip I had to Block Island, and one of the first in New England, one of these swam under me. Bear in mind the vis was about 15-20' and I could barely make out what was this big weird shape coming under me. I was both curious and scared, especially because I was new to dirty water diving and had the Jaws theme running in my mind. It eventually comes up to view sideways as if it wanted to check me out, too. It was the size of a dinner table! It hung out for a minute or two before gliding into the deep.

If this was WeirdBored, that Mola would be laying shafted on the beach within a thread titled, ''Can I eat this'' ?
''It bent my Fako shaft and lined my reel.....Oh wait, I mean drag line'':rolleyes1:Cheers, Don
