how to take off teak oil

  • Get some TSP and brass or bronze wool, along with rubber gloves.
You could also use a 2 part teak oil stripper from a marine store.Forget the mineral spirits, as it will soak in and later may eat your bands.

  • A Teak oil finish is hard to wash out, I remember Daryl Wong telling me that was a real PITA to remove the teak oil of a customer speargun. Ocean water does its job very good but that also take time. Try to sand some off and then do what Don adviced.

  • Thanks ,don paul what is tsp?

TSP cleaner, also known as trisodium phosphate cleaner, is a cleaning agent, stain remover and degreaser. It was originally used in a wide range of soaps and detergents because of its incredible cleaning power. The pH level of these cleaning agents (which are 1% solutions) is 12, which is alkaline enough to easily saponify grease and oil.

You should be able to find it in a hardware store, make sure you wear gloves.

The 2 part Teak cleaner is expensive as a kit, you may be able to get a wee bit from someone who has a sail boat or does boat maintenance.

    Cheers, Don
