Fort Bragg from Albion to Glass Beach

  • Well with school coming up and the abalone season closing for a month we decided to hit up Fort Bragg for some abalone and hopefully some lingcod. We made the 10 hour drive to the Motel 6 which was a bad choice. They had a massive party and we didn't get any rest. However we did find a nice bnb for almost the same price in the redwoods for the following nights. The first day we dove Glass Beach where I got a limit of abalone, an octopus, sea urchin and a nice cabezon. We then hit up Caspar cove and my buddy got a cabezon and a ton of uni. I then tried Albion and almost dove Van Damme but decided it was to crowded despite the crystal clear waters. The last day I decided to hit up glass beach again as the viz was really nice but that changed quickly when I was out. We ate abalone like crazy while we where out and the viz ranged from 3 to 15 feet. I cant wait to go back out again and enjoy the fresh abs. Oddly enough on the first dive out at Glass Beach my lady met Trace and his wife and we all started talking diving and then realized we where both members here on Speardiver. So lets go diving soon. :) We then did the mandatory pier 39 and golden gate bridge pictures on the 10 hour drive back home. It was a great trip and now we know where to stay.

  • Hey Alex it was nice to meet you and your wife. You had outstanding conditions at Glass Beach that day. I was very jealous, wish I had gear with me. Very busy with work. need to get together soon for a dive.

  • Back in the day when there was a wood mill there they would dump the trash into the water. Over the years all the glass was crushed by the surf and polished. All the glass ended up washing up on the beach. Its a shame because people collect the glass and from what I understand there is not nearly the same amount as there use to be.

  • It was the dump site for the city of Fort Bragg from 1940 to 1967. The sea just reclaimed every thing and the broken glass gets pushed back to shore in this cove. It glass looks like the size of little pebbles big sand.

  • I'm such a pus, never dove north of Santa Barbara ......I never should have volunteer'ed to help the Shark Research Committee years ago, I'm brainwashed now.;)

Such a great report Alex, cool pictures.

  • Great report, Alex.

Don- you should try diving up north. The sharks don't bother you too much.

Sure, as long as I can get some legal snail in 8' of water. :D;) or a kiddy pool. I need to go slow to brake the ice.

  • Good stuff. Looks like you caught a good swell/weather window.

    :toast:

Yeah we scored on the weather. Swells were 1-2 feet on magicseaweed.com but in reality the ocean was smooth as glass during our stay.
