Like you said, who knows. The wishbones may not have any power from the constricting of the bands, but they've got a bunch of forward momentum.
Try running the shaft thru the muzzle and check if the crimp is at the same level of the damage maybe it was the line crimp at the sharkfin.

Jeff I had the same issue in a closed track nylon muzzle I fab'ed in 82 , that I ran a wing tab'ed shaft
threw. I believe the shaft/swage caused the damage and not the metal wishbones.
The first two test mules I made I blew off the end of my gun.:@
That's why testing can be so fun.:D
I'm going out now to test my old bones and mountain bike now.
