You need a powerful speargun with float & bungee if spearing Doggies in the pass. Don Paul is the only one on the forum that has speared in the pass that I'm aware of - maybe Don will chime in. I've heard the trick is to get your Doggie in hand before the men in grey take him :@

Hola
I am a gringo living in Guadalajara. I've been diving in Baja most of my life, but the mainland is new to me. Its great to check out new places, and new species.
My time to dive is limited by work, but as time goes on I hope to explore the coast from Sonora to Chiapas. Poco a poco
GDL - stay away from the Boom Boom. :nono: :laughing3:

Woooooo don't get me started. I duck hunted literally the entire season. The people I know here have a house boat in the middle of the Atchafalaya and we went every weekend. So many wet, 30 degree mornings. Where the camp is located there are sloughs accessible from the main waterways and basically 0 chance of anyone else hunting there. We would sometimes hunt from the boat, sometimes we would cover the boat and walk in waist deep flooded timber till we found good cypress trees to lean on and wait for the sun to come up. I probably shot off over 200 shotgun shells over the course of the season and I hit one duck :,)
Well worth every minute and the non resident license and stamp, though.
Damn I'm envious. Only got to Duck hunt in the flooded Cypress trees in northern Louisiana years and years ago. Killing a duck is not important wool hoo!!!

More than a few!
And some unexpected old ones from the days of sextons, directional radios and dead reckoning and before hurricane warnings haha

Not sure how this might app,y to your situation - but I was doing some spearing in murky pretty sharky water and felt a black or camo fins would keep sharks from being attracted to my fins/legs. Probably nothing more then mental but still ... :@

I too had the first green handle one many years ago, the handle was med soft and had a almost sticky feel . Make sure to remember it's length when delivering a Coup de grace to the top of the scull on fish smaller then 50 lbs....
I didn't once and found out how easy that sharp double penetrates a gloved wet hand.:@
Great knife though for sure, held a edge very well.Cheers, Don
Nice to hear your public voice Don - welcome back. You have been missed by many. :thumbsup2:

You spearo's in SoCal are in 7th heaven this year. Early big YT, early and Big WSB and now daily reports of BFT being speared over 100 #'s with videos showing hundreds of big BFT swarming divers. Just this week a guy speared a BFT weighing 165 pounds with a rail gun off a jet ski :@:D.
Great time to be a spearo in SoCal so what's a few baby GWS. Get out there and spear your BFT before they disappear. :thumbsup2:

I have always thought Pargo were some of the most durable fish in the Cortez. Now I may have evidence.
Attached photos show Pargo I shot that had a broken single flopper tip buried just above its gill plate.
The tip is small maybe 2" , part of the shaft threads are still in place. The fish was totally healed up and healthy. Has anyone seen this kind of thing before?Wahoo, Pargo - you are killing it in the Sea of Cortez. PM sent.

Not all billfish are the same. Many Marlin and Sailfish are taken by hook & line and by spear without much danger of being impaled. Not so with swordfish. There are hundreds of stories about swordfish attacking boats. Swordfish ARE agressive and the previous link of a swordfish attacking the submersible fits its known temperament.
Sad story, but spearing a swordfish is asking for trouble (Jon -Ulusub having recently done it notwithstanding)..

I wish. I think there are some islands to the south of us but I doubt we'll get there. Miss this place. But snapper time is coming back home. Yep
You didn't fool me Hank - having been in Bangladesh I knew this was going to be a non starter. Are you starting up a new shrimp farm for your company or consulting to help someone just stating, or perhaps trouble shooting an existing farm? From what I saw - finding adequate and sufficient "CLEAN" water would be a challenge. :@
Good luck

I know the public demands lots of tuna, I know fishermen need to make a living - but it saddens me to see such a magnificent animal slaughtered like this. Wonder if enough "escape" the miles of nets to spawn and propagate the species.

Well done. Age is only a number - congratulations.

Welcome - we have a member (missing for a while now) who spent a lot of time spearfishing in your neck of the woods - Don Paul. He is full of stories of the early days diving French Polynesia and of course the numerous sharks. How many Doggies do you lose to the men in grey diving the pass?
Look forward to your stories and photos

Welcome
Nice intro
Great catches -PR's
That is a sick Bug. :thumbsup2:

Hookin is right. A 90 is OK for SoCal but IMHO a 100 minimum or perhaps a110 would be best since you will need/want larger gun sooner than later. Again, Hookin's comment about dragging any thing through the kelp is a PiTA. A good float line with a small carrot float (or no float) is best for SoCal. Maybe a compromise and 100cm is something to consider. Truth is - one Speargun s never going to fill all your needs.
Edit: had another thought - for SoCal, especially shore diving, get a white or yellow float line for hi vz!
