That is just heartbreaking. I am sorry that you lost a friend and am sad for his wife and family. Be careful everyone.

Yep... Typo. It is Neah Bay I am referring to.
I think the wreck you dove was the Diamond Knot. It sits in about 130 fsw and is a few miles west of Port Angeles. Great dive with massive Lings and big schools of Rockfish. Definitely past my free diving skills!

Well nine of our 13 fishing areas are closed for Rockfish and Lingcod currently. Only the coast is open right now for spearing with the exception of Cabezon, Perch and Greenling in those areas.
Near Bay is pretty much the only showin town and you will need a boat. The shore areas get hit hard and while you can find fish you will see numbers/species like Northern VI once you get on a boat and get west of Neah Bay itself.
Can't help you too much with Oregon.

Nice Greenling and Black Rockfish.
It's been a good summer so far for Lings down here in Washington. Do you hunt the south end of Vancouver Island.

Great video TB3...
Water must be warm if you are using atlas gloves. I wish we could shoot Coppers and Tiger Rockfish but they are off limits. Very enjoyable video. Thanks!

This may be unique to the individual so take it as such.
Flonase is really hard on my system and I feel it when I use it in a negative way. My nasal passages hurt when I am using it routinely and to me it is a side effect that is worse then the benefit.
Also my FIL used it for allergy relief for a few years and lost his sense of smell and related taste to what he feels was using Flonase. It's a steroid I believe. I always thought they were meant to help out short term and not something to use with regularity.
Anyways I am glad it us helping your diving but it isn't for everyone and the user should read up on it before choosing to use it. I use Allegra D during dive season and sometimes a Sudafed to guarantee clear passages. I don't like it but I have allergies so you deal with it.

Fantastic fish
Thanks George! The big one was definitely one of my biggest Lings while freediving. It was a good fight and she cut well. Normally the smaller ones eat much better.

Just read through the five pages of your reports. Nice job and some good stories. Will be in Kauai in a couple of weeks and looking forward to seeing some of these fish.

Well it worked out and a lesson was learned so that is something to be thankful for. Be careful! On the flip side isn't it nice you got back into the water?

He doesn't really try to run but it is work to spot him
Lingcod are the apex predator in our waters. They are also ambush predators. In heavily hunted areas they will leave when divers show up. In other areas they will hold their ground and rely on their excellent camouflage to hide them. Sometimes we have to go back into caves and ledges to find them. Still it is nothing like blue water hunting. We have nothing like that up here.

Most of my coastal diving takes place in a boat but we do have some good shore spots. This was one of those.

Nice! I need to figure out the video thing. Good work.

Sorry guys for the late response. I am not the chef in the house just the hunter gatherer. I guess it has always been a NW thing to do with Cabezon. Cube it, boil them in 7-Up, when they start to float off bottom, enjoy. Try it with a dense white meat and. You might like it. Not an expensive recipe so if it doesn't suit your tastes you are out any pricey ingredients. It is NOT exactly like Lobster as the name suggests but still good.
Here is a website that uses Halibut.

Nice job TB3! That's a nice Cabbie as well. Great timing.
We make "Poor Mans Lobster" from them. Cut it into 1" cubes and then boil them in 7-Up. Dip in butter.
Congrats! Were you on the west side of Gravina?

Stick em... Deep in trout season sounds good to me. I rarely get a chance to fish my three weight anymore since living in Idaho.
Tree... I think they get thicker as you head south. I saw dozens down in Santa Barbara area last lobster season. I don't see them all of the time here and rarely shoot them. Like their name suggests they are all head. You don't get big fillets from them. You ever make it down to the Seattle area in the summer or fall?

Are the Cabezon plentiful in AK? All of the fishing I did in the SE I cannot recall ever catching a Cabezon. Lots of variety but no Cabbies.

The last two days I have been on the coast and in the sound above Seattle. The coast yielded a couple of nice Lingcod and a tasty species we call Cabezon.
Today was the Dungeness Crab opener for the Puget Sound. Our limits are not as generous as what Treebilly experiences but five is enough. Way too many bottom scraping bubble blowers out today but we were quicker then them.
Good eats for Independence Day. Happy fourth all.

Even though it has more reach I still am not taking long shots. I would say it may open me up to six to eight foot shots on a Ling or Rockfish. Bear in mind that eight feet from the spear tip is a long shot for me. I will try and reach out a little bit more on the upcoming Neah Bay trips where vis is much better.
