its a huge improvement over no grip but I havent gotten it in the water yet, hopefully this thursday and/or sunday. it is at home depot in the electrical section mine is 3m brand and its in a box not just a roll. originally I was planning on using wraps of thin rope as a grip (i believe thats how indians and eskimos made grips on spears) but I like the stickiness of the tape and its thinner reducing parasitic drag.

LB i wrapped mine from the butt end towards the point because the way the water flows over it. (again trying to minimize drag in the water) which way do you go or prefer to go?

ME TOO!!! hahaha, quote of the century.

have you mad a good grip yet for the spear?

yeah friday after the current kicked my ass i went to home depot and got some 3m tape and wrapped it and got some green spray paint because my blue ocean camo job was too blue for the waters around here. found 1/2" aluminum rod there (36") for the same price I paid for 4 inches online so I picked that up so I have extra and can play around with once my supplies get here.

steven you trying to sell it or are you keeping it as a backup??? sometimes it would be nice to have a gun, being a mechanic wears on my hands and some days i cant even hold my polespear.... I hate when work interferes with spearfishing

so ideally you want an 8ft plus tip??? stainless isnt that expensive, the hardest part is to find threaded rod of that size, im thinking I would have to buy rod and thread it. the outside diameter is 3/4" and its 1/8" wall.

OK so I caved and ordered the parts to make the spear... came out to $33.17 shipped. should be here sometime next week and ill keep you guys updated on progress.

Lunker - I was thinking more about a breakdown model, and just wanted to inform you that due to the extra pieces req'd. it would cost a little bit more. I need to know how long you want each segment and # of segments so I could put together an approximate price of materials. second thing I was thinking about would be attaching the segments, since I dont have a machine shop my plan was thread the tube and use a threaded insert in each one, securing one side with jb weld. Now heres where the problem arose: to use that 3/4" tube i need to try to find 9/16" threaded rod (preferably aluminum) if I cant find aluminum my next suggestion would be stainless. the only problem with using stainless is that by using disimilar metals we would be inducing corrosion. other thought on this was, and it involves alot more work, would be to buy 9/16" aluminum rod and I could thread it. thus helping to prevent corrosion and using all aluminum saves a little bit of weight also I wouldnt have to use jb weld I could actually weld the one threaded side in. let me know if you have any thoughts/ideas. im excited to see how mine turns out and we can proceed forward with making you one depending on my final product.

can you post pics of the odor broken down please?

I am intrigued about how you would assemble the parts

how do I post pictures??? I have the one piece so the only "pieces" per se are the tip, main shaft, and the band. I think im going to buy the pieces to make a hollow one and see how it turns out... lunker im thinking about it and depending on how mine turns out I may be able to make you something that you could use on your yak...

so I had a thought today after using the ray odor a bit... I can order aluminum tube and 2 small solid pieces (for each end) to make lighter version of the ray odor spear, supplies would cost about 30 bucks shipped. Total weight savings from the odor to my version would be about 5.6 ounces ( from 2.16 pounds to 1.81 pounds - without band or tip but those two things are constant) My question is how much faster would the spear be? assuming I left the band the same... I figure any reduction in weight will result in an increase in speed. the only other details being that mine would be 3/4" outside diameter versus 5/8" which i figure is minuscule in regards to the increase in drag versus the improved grip... What do you guys think??

    mrmike---thank you sir.:toast:
That may be exactly what I am looking for.
Can your dad spot weld a small pin to the top of my SS spear also?
I can pay cash for any fabrication
I'll get back to you in the next day or so.
    Again thank you

we dont have a spot welder but he can tack it(which sounds like what your talking about), just fyi he tig welds. I will try to talk to him and see if/when he could do it. also do you need the battery box fabbed up or will you do the fab work and hell just have to weld it? only reason i ask is because he doesnt have lots of spare time.
