Mask reviews and defogging procedures

  • I have a Samurai and it fits well but I prefer a Sporasub Sniper. That's the one I use most. I don't like small masks.

I can sacrify a little bit of internal volume to get more pheripherial vision. Anyway, I inhale the air remaining in the mask while ascending.

Is this the Sporasub Sniper mask you use?

I wonder if it compares to the omer Bandit the same way the Sporasub Samurai compares to the omer Abyss.

    The omer Bandit mask.

I find the omer Abyss and Bandit to be identical in fit and lens size. The only difference it the Bandit has less plastic in the frame. I thought of getting the Bandit for sake of having a lighter mask but after handling it I saw that it is less rigid due to the thinner frame and figured that it would break easier. I couldn't feel a difference wearing it. The Bandit is also more expensive than the Abyss.

What is the distance between the corners of the lenses on the Sporasub sniper?

If the Sporasub Sniper is no longer available what is the Mares equivalent?

  • Spetton has the same mask. It is called "reflex". Is a silicone mask, made in Italy, not fancy, not too expensive. ;)

They also have a camo version:

But the mask is a very personal item; the one I like, maybe doesn't fit you right.

Mine is just the same but the brand name is Nemdor. I have a couple pictures here:

  • So you're saying that the Sporasub Sniper = Spetton Reflex = Nemdor. What is this brand name Nemdor, where are they made? Nice fish BTW.

The mask is made in Italy. I don't know by who. Probably the same one that makes "Riffe" and "Spetton" Knives... :rolleyes1:

Nemdor was (it disappeared) a brand name registered by the former Nemrod (Spain) Distributor in Venezuela when the Factory in Spain closed. A long story.... Now Nemdor also disappeared since the owner retired in Spain when the political situation of my country became like it is now.

  • ^^ thanks for the tip btw, i will be treating the Omer bandit i have this way.

the omer alien has gained reputation as the Alien Fog, go figure..

I have an alien mask and it´s a pain in the ass. Even the skirt is too faible. The Aqa and riffe masks rules...

  • Monster, where in Mexico do you go to buy gear?

I've bought 1 omer Alien and 3 omer Abyss masks, they all fogged badly without treatment. After treatment like I said no problem. I would say that fogging (before treatment) is not specific to the Alien mask but to all the omer line.

There is no place here to get decent gear. Most of the gear i have is from divers that come from the usa and sell the items to me, or i order gear from great divers parting with some stuff :D i am a gear freak, and i´m really picky about it, cause a fogging mask for instance can result in a serious accident. The Aline mask i got it from Gonzalo who lives in the states and he sold it to me two years ago...the blue cammo one.

  • I use a lighter with the flame on high to run the yellow part of the flame on all glass surfaces to the point that it gets hot to the touch and soot forms. Be careful not to melt any plastic and rubber, it's a little tricky to do on the inside of the mask.

You don't need to go diving to test the mask. I put it on in front of a mirror and blow into it through the nose. You can clearly see the hard to reach areas of the glass where the treatment was less effective start to fog a little where the well treated areas stay clear. As long as those hard to reach areas don't fog immediately it will be fine in the water.

Do other Mexican divers do the same? Sounds like Cuba but it shouldn't be, Mexico is a developed country no? Why don't you guys order from online shops? Are they unwilling to ship to Mexico or is shipping unreliable or too expensive?

The tariffs and taxes are insane, plus the shipphing fee, is almost double. they send all the stuff to Mexico city first for customs and then they send it to the final customer along with a big fee.
