Modifed Neptonics Reef Mech

  • For the next gun that I'm planning, I want the handle to be as high (in line with the shaft) as possible. I have a Neptonics Reef trigger mech, and the only thing that I don't like is that the spring which connects the sear and trigger is attached quite low on the trigger. So I "adjusted" it, and moved the spring up by about 1/4", which puts it just below the line release slot, and will in turn allow me to raise my handle by the same amount.

Drilling the hole was the toughest part. I found the trigger to be harder than most stainless shafts that I have drilled.

  • Tin Man---SWEET modification:)
How hard would it be to incorporate a trigger mech like that into an enclosed track euro pipe gun?:thumbsup2:

Man, you just never give up do you?!!!:thumbsup2: I hope you get your gun soon!

Jeff, how much did this affect the trigger pull? It seems it would have made it a tad lighter?

It's the same spring pull on a shorter lever arm, so yes, the trigger pull should be a little lighter. But I can't tell the difference. It still feels nice and crisp.

Hau - You have two options here. You can wait for the project that Chad and I continue to slowly plod along with . . .

. . . Or you can buy a mess of FRA raffle tickets and design your own dream gun!

  • Ihab's Nile-tec trigger has the spring positioned higher, very similar to my Neptonics mod. He has recently been working with Kitto to tune the design, and the test data for trigger pull vs. band load is pretty good.

He says The Nile-Tec trigger casing is 0.52" wide x 1.18" high x 2.83 " long, so it would NOT be a drop in replacement for other mechs. I just thought I would add it here since it accomplishes the same end result as my modified Neptonics trigger, with far less effort. However I have NOT tried one of these trigger mechs myself, so I would be interested to hear an evaluation from anyone who has.

  • i have enjoyed watching the threads by Ihab and I feel he does some nice work... Ireally don't know about all the drama w/ him and neptonics..

very cool mod Jeff..I never cease to be amazed

I have one of the Nile-Tec mechs, but not sure what you're looking for exactly as far as evaluation. :confused1:

Let me know, I'll try to oblige. :)

  • In particular, I would like to see how the top line release and his silencer work. I made a silencing screw for an Alexander trigger a while back, but I don't know which of Chad's guns it ended up in, or whether he is still using it. It was just a stainless machine screw, with a hole drilled through the middle and a small piece of rubber inserted, but it seemed to do the trick. I was just wondering if the Nile-tec works similarly, or uses a different approach.

On a more general note, I'm just curious if your overall impression is of a well made mech, especially the pieced together housing. Is everything really polished as it is in his photos?

Everything is polished & seems to be pretty solid. I'll take a more scrutinizing look later; however, the line release/silencer is rivetted in and flush, so I can't dissect it. Will shoot you a PM when I get to it. :D

  • Dan - I noticed that Ihab was registered here, and I have encouraged him through PM to post his new products here, but so far it seems that he has chosen not to.

His handles and handle frames are available at Scubasworld, so presumably that is where the triggers will eventually be available. They are listed at $55 on his Nile-tec website.

    Hi All,
Every time I read something about my products I get a bit nervous since things started off with a blast as soon as I began introducing stuff in the US in particular.
First, I owe Tin Man some info about my trigger mech which I was too lazy to do so here it is……
For the internal Silencer….I bought internal tire tubing, cut it in small pieces to fit inside the trigger mech and made 2 holes opposite each other about 17.5 mm apart and used rivets to hold the tubing inside the mech.
When the gun is fired, the end of the shear hits against the tubing instead of the internal walls of the mech making it very silent…you just hear a very low "bob" sound when the gun is fired…actually one of the testers of my new gun was surprised how quite the gun was when fired……I still own Tin Man info on the top line release which I will post shortly……..Let me knowif there is anything else needed and I'll try to post here as much as possible.

    Cheers,
    Ihab

  • Did Ihab make this mech with the intentions of selling it in the US? How much does it retail for? Who sells it in the US? Ihab is a registered user here BTW.

    Dan,
Yes I intend to sell in the US and have made 2 versions of this mech.....US & Euro shaft mech...but both cannot accomodate shafts that are rigged with the mono at the butt end of the shaft....but I'm working on it.

I'm also working on a project to convert any speargun (wood) so that the bands align parallel to the shaft without much modifications and very low $$$.
I've noticed that the more the band are inline with the shaft, the more the accuracy of the gun since all the recoil is directed in the same direction where you originally are pointing....i.e.....No Muzzle Flip...and very very little if any.

I like long shots since I'm not a deep diver (50' max) so an accurate gun with a double wrap is important for me....(try the Ramsis II for accuracy ;))

    Cheers,
    Ihab

  • Glad you're back Ihab, and thanks for the silencer explanation. Is the rubber piece replaceable?

Thanks Tin Man...just a quick note...I've just read your question about the quality & polishing issue of the Nile-Tec mech....let's just say what you see is what you get.
The mechs included in the 5 Ramsis guns that went out to be test, Fuzz has one, where not the latest design so I think I should send you the long awaited sample...about 4 days from today...how about that.

Oh, before I forget, no the rubbers are not replacebale & I like your idea better:D....maybe I will use it in the future...if you do not mind.

    Nice touch.

Thank you, that is very generous of you. I look forward to playing with it.

We are seldom as clever or original as we think we are, so I'm sure that someone else did it years ago (and Don Paul probably knows who). But from my end, anything I post is for anyone to use however they can. If you get rich on it, remember me! :D

  • I only built six mechs for my own guns, I stole the geometry from Under Sea with minor sear angle changes.
I made my housings from 17/4 along with the trigger and sear. The inside roof of mine was sand blasted
so I could lay in a thin layer of 3M 5200, the cure time was 48 hrs. This mech is still in my gun and has survived 20+ years. I did not share the mod with anyone, but my dive mates would tell be how quite my
    high powered gun was.

Any other silenced trigger builders discovered the mod on their own.
Tin- Man I really like your version alot for unheat treated housings.
    Cheers, Don
