Pneumatic speargun mods

  • Call scubasworld, they will give the right oring for the correct piston and mail it to you in an envelope. Just driving to a place will cost you more on gas.

  • The gun turned out nice! Have you painted it before applying the shrink tube? I'm afraid you took off the anodization when you cleaned it and will have corrosion pretty soon at the barrel... :(

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • Marco, no I didn't paint it. In Cuba I've seen guys use raw aluminum/unpainted barrels often with no rust. I believe that corrosion in aluminum happens in places where there's contact between different metal parts. There is no contact between the barrel and any metal parts. Consider also that when I found it a lot of the paint was rubbed off, you can tell from the underwater pic by how shiny the gun is. There was lots of barnacles but no corrosion. Lets see what happens.

  • I checked again with Scubas world and they don't sell the o ring separately. This time they gave me a different price though, $15 for the kit containing all the rings for that gun. This isn't too bad. I may buy it since I just realized that the gun is actually a Cyrano 1100 not a 970. Being a longer gun it motivates me more to bring it to working condition. I'll keep it as a loaner gun even though I feel that for someone who is trying spearfishing for the first time it's more difficult to learn to load a pneumatic than a band gun. Especially since I keep the pneumatics well pumped up.

Harry, can you describe what the difference is between the Mamba and Tovarich kits? Also will the Tovarich kit fit the cyrano?

BTW Davie, now that I know that it's an 1100 could it possibly be the gun that you lost a few months back? Was it loaded when you lost it and what kind of shooting line were you using?

  • It will work for all pneumatics but it has to shoot a 7mm or 9/32 shaft. Going to bed. Ill tell you tomorrow the differences.

  • i have a cyrano 110 with mamba kit and i live it .in cuba i always used big guns with 9 or 10mm shafts they were very powerful but very dificult to controld just like a wild horse but the cyrano is a lot priciser and manuable.just make it into a mamba and youl love it.

  • Tovarich kit supposidely fires harder and faster than mamba kit. It has very little drag considering it has no pieces on the shaft. It just has the mono attached to the front of the spear. It works really good for open water fish but not for grouper since the line is attached to the spear up top. If a fish holes up, it could be a problem getting it out.

Tovarich kit contains only one oring so its more simple than mamba kit and less stuff can go wrong. I havent had any problem with mamba kit though.

I don't plan on changing anything on my gun. It's a perfect gun for me.

  • Harry, does this look like the Tovarich kit? It's from Marco's post earlier in this thread.

Does it come with a piston or just the muzzle? Maybe you can post a pic of the kit components. I'm thinking of buying one of yours.

Does the Tovarich kit really prevent any water in the barrel? This it achieves with simply o rings in the muzzle?

  • I bent the trigger pin of the pneumatic during assembly. I straightened it but the tolerance is small so it's not moving in there properly. The pin is 16mm long (not important if it's longer because I can cut it but can't be shorter) and 1.46mm in diameter. Called scuba's world and they simply don't sell the pin. Any ideas?

  • Dan,
I have a kit coming from Ramon Boto(Karayo) if you need something I could tell him to drop it in the package.
By the way, the guy is a great person. Its taken us forever but he's had some personal setbacks. He gave me an incrdible deal because of all the issues.

  • It was never an experiment, just something fun to do before I got real busy with the spearfishing gear company. I've been off pneumatics for a long time, my first gun 10 years ago was a Mares Cyrano 970. Having a pneumatic and modding it is just like any other toy that you get into. If you want to know specifically why I prefer band guns check out this thread http://spearfishing.world/seve…perior-to-pneumatics.html

As to why I decided to sell the gun at this particular moment, Greek's thread about his new band gun reminded me that I'll probably never use it. Another reason I kept it till now is because a while back I said I was going to debunk the idea that short pneumatics are more powerful than short band guns, see this thread http://spearfishing.world/spea…lent-length-band-gun.html I actually have the stock of the short band gun made and the trigger mech sitting there, but I can't be bothered to prove this to anybody any more.

  • I will still use my 100cm pneumatic for hole gun and shooting big fish with a second shot. The 8mm short shaft is unbendable! Ask Davie how well the 100cm pneumatic penetrated the head of a 60lb cobia. It went through it like butter!

I will use my pneumatic to put a second shot in any big fish.

Me too... I still have a Mares sten 140 that was built for the Italian world team, it's killed tuna with on problem
even with out the Mamba Wamba.:D:D
I used to test dive with a engineer from Scuba Pro, when it gets cold here in Calli I'll tell some very funny storys
about the always loaded 140 stens on board.

  • Always loaded pneumatics on board :@ :)

You'll have no arguments about the short range penetration power of a pneumatic from me. I shot through a turtle shell once with that old Cyrano 970. Another advantage is the shafts are cheap or easy to make.
