bluewater freediving azores

  • Well done, it interseting that bottlenose are the more courious breed than the others. I also like the contrast of the albino looking Remoras.

  • Cool ...I was still on the edge of my seat waiting for a 700# blue fin to swim up for a broadside.:D

  • Tinu,
I've always wanted to go to the Azore's. I saw some of your other spearfishing vids there. Can you tell us a little about the fishing there and also about the fish species?

  • hi,
i went to santa maria in aug./sept. 2008 for a few weeks. the idea was to find out if my divingskillz will work in another part of the world then tobago/trinidad, since i never dived anywhere else.. as well i wanted to do some underwaterfilming, since i never had much practice. i contacted paulo reisa, from bwexpeditions, he lives on the island and spearfish there all his life. he have a tackle/spearfishing shop on the island( rabitechdealer). so i went there, santa maria is a small island, 10 by 10 km, and 5000 people. 1500 km of portugal, in the middle of the atlantic, there is nothing much to do then fishing. paulo knows the water very good. there are some pinneclas around the island, rising from deep waters to 60-120 feet below the surface. water is mostly crystal blue.
vis 30-40m,norma. around these pinneclas bluewaterdrifting. big wahoos,50-80 p and big amberjacks are the main target. saw some big bigeyetunas and yellowfin 50-150 p passing sometimes in the distance, never get a shot and when i had a shot ,i had no gun, but cam.get some on line. these waters also attract a lot of dolphins, whales, mantas etc. something was al;ways to see. there is also an area(i forgot the name) 25 miles of the island, a underwaterplateau 1 -2 squaremiles, rising from 3000meter to 100-200 feet below surface. never got to go there, the weather have to be good, and you have to go with at least two boats, for safety. there is where most of the game fishing boats get there big marlins and tunas etc. there is also excelent shore diving. waves on one side of the island, just go to the sheltered side. i was diving 5-6 of seven days. boat and shore about fifty-fifty. the shore dives have amazing structures and a lot of marine life. the brown grouper is the only protected species. i saw average 3-5 in a day, between 10-50 pounds. amberjacks, hog fish, trevallys, lippfish, mottled grouper, bream, barracuda, you get regulary. licence for a month cost 20.-us. 10 fish per day/person limit.
people are great, had a great place to stay, for 300.-us month, food is cheap. i gave all my fish to my host.
they cooked for me almost dayly for free, and picked me up after diving, when i was in some bay with plenty fish, and to tired to ride back home on my bike. paulo reisa really made no wrong promises about the place,
he really made this time in santa maria a time to remember all my life. if any of you ever plan to go there,
let me know, or check him by yourself. wow, havent wrote so much for a long time.
    all the best....
