New Muzzle Design

  • Here's a new muzzle design that Jeff and I have been playing with. It provides in-line band pull using regular bands, which can be easily replaced.

It features a curved band slot that dips down well below the track area and comes up at an angle on the sides of the track. It's not easy to make, but by doing it in steps along with the carbon fiber layup, it's do-able.

  • very cool innovations..i have come to expect no less from you two ballers..

thanks for the info...have you thought about making a delrin shape that you could just insert into the tip and then carbonfiber around that and just cut open the hols after? might be easier

    i like to spear fish

  • The problem with that is cutting the curved slot in the delrin is just as hard as cutting it in any other material. You have to "build" it in stages. I don't know a way to cut if from a single block and a muzzle isn't an area where I want to rely on glued together pieces.

  • jeff, the head on your mill angles, so why not just angle it to the angle you want, cut the first half, turn it around, index it with the DRO, and cut the second half? Am I missing something?

  • The problem is that the angled cuts won't meet in the middle. You have to make a "normal" band slot cut first, wrap in lots of carbon (1/4" wall thickness) and then make the angled cuts down into the already cleared out slot.

  • Am I missing something?

The muzzles usually aren't deep enough (top to bottom) to drill two holes (or slots) on much of an angle and meet in the middle. It works best if the slot is a curve, so that it can exit higher on the muzzle.

I was thinking that I could cut it from the end, using X and Y coordinates to simulate an arc. The DRO has a routine for this. Then just make a fitting piece to seal the end of the slot, and held in place with a screw. Similar to the way many band slots have a little shim to fill the cut, but thicker and curved.

  • Or you could use the curved end mill you've been designing. You know, like the curved spear shaft that shoots around corners!

Seriously, what if you used a smaller diameter end mill like I mentioned before, then opened it up "selectively" to get the curved shape? Maybe even a dremel with a long, 1/8" end mill for the final rounding inside the muzzle?

Might be worth screwing up a piece of pine to find out!

  • Hey Guys, that shape is spot on.:thumbsup2: Does one of you have a Fadal ?

I'm not suggesting you ever load a gun out of H20 on land, a long shaft with 4-5 bands can go clear through a
    industrial building roof.

When I tested bands on the guns:thumbsup I used a 6'' test shaft, it can still kill someone but it won't go into orbit.:D
A h2o spray bottle is good to pre-wet the bands and slot.

  • What happens when you shoot a 6" shaft from a two band speargun out of the water? Does it go straight?

Yes, I used a fixture to dry fire 67'' 5/16th' shaft inside a 1'x20' heavy wall PVC tube test bed, into a metal milk crate with telephone books. You can go to the last penetrated page # and and know how good that new French rubber is. I would test at different soak times, 1hr, 4hr and 6hr.
Don't do this as it is very addictive and dangerous.;)

  • Don,

To answer your question about a Fadal, I had to look it up to know what you were talking about. The answer is NO.

I shot a spear through a wall, through another wall and into brick once. This was with 1 band. My wife was not pleased.

    Sorry Dan I misread your question I never shot the 6 inch bolt.I did shoot a 3/8 x 36 in a 70'' barrel with 4- 5/8s
bands @ 300%. but I'll put that in a new post some day.

One band .... you pussy,;):D:D I snuck into our club house pool one night after the pool had been refinished.
I shot through my 3/4'' plywood target @ 20 and stuck the shaft into the fresh wall. Thank god for Splash Zone.:thumbsup2:
