Basic freedive spearfishing gear

its kind of nostalgic to think how mysterious the ocean is before you spend a great deal of time in it
and as far as the gear to importance ratio, i think everything listed is important,, but it seems like the point of the thread is if you were going to get in the water you would need to be able to see(mask) breath(snorkel) and dive (fins) -
I think a lot of you missed the "to be continued" phrase at the bottom of the first post. I had no intention of leaving it like that, I'm going to add everything else to it in order of most important, I just got busy. Regardless it's making for a good discussion.
-
here is how i break it down...in order of importance
Mask
fins
snorkel
spear device
knife
stringer (fish holding device)boat counts
gloves
weightbelt and weights
wetsuit(can vary depending on water temp..in Alaska, this is second to mask, in miami, it is last)
boat -
You forgot the belt and weights.
-
i disagree with the stringer. A stringer is probably the stupidest piece of equipment you can carry. In miami and keys bahamas you dont want to carry dead fish around sharks and barracudas pose a real threat. Ideally you want to have a driver close by picking up fish.
Weight belt and weights are essential along with fins and mask. A set of balls wont hurt either.
-
Barracudas pose a threat :confused1:
-
well if you have a stringer on your belt they will make strike at your fish and tear everything in the way.
-
I never use a stringer on the belt, I use it on float line, and you do too. The fact that yours is made of mono doesn't mean it's not a stringer. Ya veo que te mejoraste LOL

Sdeisen, just rephrasing your post a bit:
its kind of nostalgic to think how mysterious the ocean is before you spend a great deal of money in it
) -
haha, it applies, ill admit
-
I didn't really get what you were trying to say there Steven. If you feel like explaining.. sounds deep :acid:
-
what i took from it, and I'm known for being waayyy off, was that the ocean becomes a little familiar to you once you make it your home, not that it loses it's mystique, but you are now "in" on some of her secrets and there is a fraternal connection...when you have only stood on the shore and looked at her, she is much much scarier, grander and unfathomable (hahaha).
