• Sooooo, I went diving today after I got off work. I headed to my house in Costa Mesa and got there at about 5pm and was rushing off to PV by 5:15. I got there and the water at the spot I chose looked EPIC! I could see the reefs in the surf line and it was flat with no wind, swell, or surf. Perfect! I got in to a disappointing 10ft and less throughout most of my dive. Nevertheless I dove hard and found slightly better viz in about 35ft when laying on the bottom. There was plenty of bait, but never saw or heard any seabass. I was doing 2 minute dives. My best all year! Something about dirty water really helps me keep focused. BTW water was 61 on the surface and 59 on the bottom although it felt colder down there. As I was heading in I saw a sheephead which my buddy loves and took careful time to aim for a stone shot 10ft away and close enough to the reef to bust my slip tip if I missed. It weighed about 10 lbs and died instantly from perfect shot placement. You know, I really feels great trying for a specific shot and hitting it directly. Sometimes I just point and shoot at bigger fish like seabass, but I am trying to have better control of that. I strung him up and headed in as it was getting dark. Right in 10 feet of water I saw what I thought was a couple of seabass, but wait, YELLOWTAIL!!! I lined up on the first one and it took off, but I was locked on and made a near perfect shot. Just missing the spine it went nuts, but was mine. I dove down and did some band strumming hoping the other one would come back, but nope. Almost completely dark and I got out right where I shot the little guy. Perfect ending to a day where I thought for sure I'd be skunked. I know it was sort of a fluke, but always good to keep these guys in the back of your head when hunting to keep you motivated in a spot where the last thing you expect to see is a yellow. Hamachi tomorrow for lunch and dinner.

PS. didn't weigh them, but I'm guessing about 8lbs for the yellow and 9 for the girthy sheepy.

  • Very nice when you can putting something together on a day that isn't shaping up the way you hoped.
    Thanks for reporting.

  • Nice! That'll take the edge off the work day I bet.

Good to see a fellow OC guy bringing home the goods. Makes me optimistic being a rookie and all.

  • I love swimming in there thinking "well at least I dont have to carry a heavy fish up the hill" and then yt go swimming by in 15' of water.

  • Local YT are cool, let me know if you want to dive up there some day, I buy the gas if you drive.
    Cheers, Don

    Thanks guys,

Don, would love to dive with you some time. I do a lot of last minute dives when pulling a fast one on the wife, but I will keep you in mind as well. Just last thursday I couldn't find anyone to go on my boat so I went solo:thumbsup2:

    Over seabass hunting....

  • Man I have yet to even see a yt in pv, congrats on the forkie!

Key is to not hunt for them in my experience there and they just pop up at the most random times and places.

  • Oh I so wish this was my report and not yours. I would love to find a yellowtail on a shoredive. Congrats man!

I got one last year on a shore dive too. The whole LA coastline is awesome! We are very lucky to live close enough to dive it.

    Over seabass hunting....
