almost missed him but, at 25ft and on your last breath. i was happy to get him.

  • I am sooooo jealous. Hopefully I can bag one FINALLY this weekend.

    Nice fish.

  • Good job landing it. That's looks like it was about to tear out.

If halibut are lying on the bottom, there's a really good chance, that they are going to stay put, if you need to come up for a breath. Just lay the gun down on the bottom somewhere close without spooking them so you can get a breath. Just follow the floatline back down.

Halibut are one of the only fish that I will try to "center-punch" when shooting. They are soooo soft and thin, even in the head, that they will often tear off. If I do miss the spine, the shaft will have a long way to go to tear out.

  • Nice going Hut, if you ever find them on a bolder or rock you can shoot the on a sharp angle if you keep the tip pin sharp. One other thing that may help you see them is a black mask, so your eyes will dilate more without the light coming through the skirt. I have used a favorite Italian mask for thirty years too, but I have a 1/8'' neoprene skirt glued around the frame to keep out the light. It may finally soon get retired if the Bob Hollis mask I ordered fits. I really like that white float line.

Don, No.... the hunt - and the eating are the fun part for me.............. Most of the spots I dive are just OK to good halibut spots...... not great spots.................. And I spend a lot of time looking at sand..................just sand............
