Off hand position

  • X -100 here are some poor quality scans Of a line up before a trigger pull by me on my Double gun.
You can see I have no worries with recoil with the 5/16 shaft and 3 5/8 bands on my heavy gun with H2o and lead shot ballast trim pods. The last shot are White Sea Bass that were posing.
    Cheers, Don

These photos speak one thousand words. It is apparent you do not anticipate a strong recoil that could resonate through your off hand. This gun looks like it utilizes two bands. My question is: would the recoil increase to a level of concern if the shaft were propelled by three bands? Thanks again for the photos.

  • don im liking that snorkel
are those WSB and if so are they normally midwater or like that (in the last photo)?

The snorkel is one I made for big white caps, WSB do what ever want in 2' of water or on the bottom in 90 feet.
I have even been schooled a few times 1/4 mile from shore in 700+ deep water while drift diving for tuna.
Most of my hunting is off shore at the islands and banks.

I made a large bore tube that was longer and used a month piece with molded teeth spacers for the
big waves and rough seas I dive in off shore. The unit was chewed up by the local pit bull last week.:(
He stole it from my dive box but that is my fault for walking a way for a minute.

  • Time to get on ebay and look for Farallon snorkels... best thing ever to come out of that failed effort.

Without stepping on Don's toes or his 8-1/4 on a real good day in 1967 when he had sufficient bloodflow :rolleyes1: he (and I) are fans of high mass guns, meaning they're big and heavy and so absorb the recoil of a large diameter shaft / large number of bands. It's akin to driving a truck with a few bags of cement in the bed versus a empty VW- you smack a speedbump in a loaded pickup you feel a little thud; you do the same in a Dub and you knock your fillings loose. This is why I was saying that you steer big guns versus trying to aim them. You ;earn to drive a truck right and you can do U's on a cul de sac of kelp no sweat.

A lot is made about the benefits of a hybrid and Daryl Wong is a wonderful friend of mine, but to me they're too muzzle heavy and too light in the ass, like my ex. They're ridiculously quick though and for a off the beach gun, you could do a lot worse, like buy a Euro. :laughing3:

  • :laughing3::laughing3::laughing3: My blood flow has been doing OK lately thanks.... Were only as old as the girls we date.:thumbsup2::D

Your right the Farllon was the best still.

Ahhhhhh. A specific piece of equipment to match a specific requirement. Sounds like you and Mr. Pit Bull need to have a F2F and smoke a peace pipe on the future consideration of your dive gear. Y/N?

    Baja Bound,
Curious how I have read multiple metaphors referencing spero's ex's in this forum. It causes me wonder if we continue to think of them in our extracurricular activities and wish they were still there by our sides? What plans we once had.?.?.

bahabound...., make sure you don't tell the clan.......I visit the Darkside every few years.

And Double Trouble may be heavy but she's skinny and moves quick.:D

  • No worries Don.

I did something unthinkable a year or so ago and picked up a One gun, made by Sporasub. 105 with all the bells and whistles and it's the go-to tool for a quickie off the beach or on the reef for cabrilla.

Then there's the Hammerhead for up here, the Vermillion tool. Hell for that matter I guess the 1969 Voit Custom, the Ling tool could be a Euro. Maybe I should switch coasts, start wearing thongs...:yeahright:

Hey for that matter and this goes out to the masses, who makes a THREADED 7 mm euro shaft?? Props in advance.

  • Shot by a pro Jeffery Malone with a Hasselblad ten years ago , I will use him again when I do a gun book .

    Cheers, Don

Don, really nice picture of those two fish on the bottom...or near it. Are those white sea bass? (sorry for my ignorance but I've never dived in water outside of 22 degrees latitude :D)
Due to a recent hurricane and some other bad weather before that, I've only been in the water once in the last 3 weeks. Those fish pics are getting me really stoked to go Sunday.

  • Yeah Hank, that is a pair of White Sea Bass gliding past on the bottom. They are not always the elusive ghosts that some make them out to be. If a guy lays on the bottom long enough and croaks to them the right way they may swim by to investigate. ( No White Sea Bass were harmed taking this picture);):D
The lens is 35mm so these are nice fish.
Good luck on your dive mate,

  • im geting a shipmentof 30 or 40 shafts in a couple weeks. what size do you need ? if i dont have that size in my order i will add it an i can drop it off to you on my way up north to dive and maybe you can grab a bandito from sven for me so we can bouth save on shipping
    phil

  • I'd be interested in 2-3 140cm shafts, single tab and 6mm thread and a couple flopper shafts if the price and all works. You can send me a PM.

As far as a Bandido, that's Sven's thing, I'd just send him an email and let him know you need whatever and I could pick it up or ask if/when he's going to be in the City or thereabouts to drop it to you. I know he's expecting a new run in the next week to cover the Christmas gift surge.

    Thanks!

    Don,

    Please explain "croak".

  • Don,

    Please explain "croak".

A sound made in the throat to mimic the croak of a White Sea Bass, like a call to a turkey.
It works for me but if not done correctly or too often will cause fish to shy away just like any call to wild game.

Many fish around the word can be attracted this way such as the Jacks and croaker families of fish .

  • Don,
Any truth to the rumor that strumming the bands creates a sound that arouses the curiosity in fish and prompts them to come investigate?
