Inflatable Float vs Lifeguard can float

  • I need a new float..I was checking the inflatable float(riffe, mako, sporasub) and the lifeguard hard float..Im mostly a shore diver and put the fish on the stringer so I think the fish can damage the inflatable float.I ask you guys if is durable?..the lifeguard can looks durable and strong, cheap also..Im going to ask in the other thread about the lifeguard can as a float..I need something durable and of course good price..not a float that holds 1000 pounds fish but something that works for most big fish in the caribbean(I dont use reel)..not to much drag.. shore diving sometimes is a pain in the a**..we dive for long hours and the float plus the fish is heavy..i have seen the rob allen 11lLt float...can I put a flag?..I almost forgot..it must have a flag.boats here are crazy..i really mean CRAZY...I have use bodyboards.. to much drag for shorediving..hope you guys can help me..:thumbsup2:..any suggestions are welcome.

  • If your not shooting 100 # tuna or billfish I think the life guard can is the best bang for the buck. Even with out foam few fish other than 75 lb AJ's will hurt it even if they take it down 20 feet. They last forever, your kid's will be using it. The blowup floats are great if you want to travel or not get hit in the head hard when shooting big, fast fish.....back to my cocktail.:D

  • I use a lifeguard float in Rhode Island because it was the only float that would reliably hold up a dive flag. The boaters there are ridiculous.

On the other hand, I regret not having a good inflatable float because I just flew 24 hours to visit my family on Guam and had to scrounge for a float from Mako's loaner program.

With regards to the video, I think they foam-fill those tuna floats so they don't crush at depth. I could be wrong as I'm not a bluewater guy (yet). I'd await Don Paul's take on it.

I just copied Terry Maas's floats back back in 1982 but my first float had 2 lb foam instead of 7lb. On my first trip to New Caledonia I shot a big Dog Tooth Tuna outside the reef. The life guard can with two lb foam went screaming past me behind my 100' vinyl drag line never to surface again. The worst part was I was diving with a French Champion who busted my balls about it for two days because I didn't head shoot the fish.
Back in Cali after the trip, I built three LG cans with the correct 7 lb foam Terry had told me to use.
I don't know if you Florida guys ever have billfish or big AJ's on beach dives? if so go with the 7lb foam and a 1.5 wt in the bottom if you fling a flag.
I'll see if I can find my images of crushed floats by big fish.

  • Get a couple of lobster bullet buoys and pass a PVC pipe between them. They are around 10$ each. Indestructible, no drag, good vis and CHEAP! Dan has a post over here on how to rig them.
