Bluewater Floatline & Bungee Setup questions

  • How much line does a 60lb Wahoo take before it slows down? I have only shot one and it was in the head but it didn't pull much. My reel holds 280ft of 1.75mm line.

I will probably use a floatline + bungee in bluewater but good to know that info.

I've never shot one that small, I like them fat.;) now I need one over 125 # .

I have a few at 66, 78. and 79.8 (The old IUSA twentieth century record) taken near La Paz. The 125# record came from a spot I will tell you about before you go.;)

Any Hoo over 50# can clean out the reel before you reach the surface, I wish I could show you some film I have of a Life Guard float going down to a 100' like a torpedo. Some of the spots have deep drop offs to the north, and the game fish go down and out, but the foam filled can will bring them back up. Most Hoo just make one or two big fast runs and calm down. A jammed reel or shooting line wrap in the bands is a lost gun in a heart beat. Pargo are aren't leaving the neighborhood so I some times use a lockable reel and play tug of war to keep them out of the cave. The big Pargo in La Paz know how to wrap cable deep into the caves. Then there are the 90 to 125 lb grouper that can clean the heavy duty wings of the Euro shaft if it's not in their brain.

AJ and Yellowtail down there have a death wish, a slip tip and pole spear with drag line and float is all you need. your 120 will slay them....just bring a bunch of shafts if you go to the sunken ferry.:D

Reels are fun, but I think you'll be winding line back on more then shooting if you get schooled. drag lines and single float get you back in the game much faster. If a fish is not a record, I hand the shaft to the chase boat and have him hand me another 3/8 shaft and cable i have pre rigged. I like to stay in the action when it go's off, nothing worse the sitting in the Panga dicking with gear and a Marlin breach's off the stern.

  • Don, the plan is to go with a spearing resort in la Paz around june for the Wahoo. They will have the pangas. I don't really know too much other than to let the guides do their thing.

Insanely useful thread from experienced divers!

I think you might ask them about Cerralvo Island.

  • Hi Dan,
We make most of the stuff we use over here including Floats. We use a Snubber Release system so that a float can be pulled like a torpedo when swimming, but go down sideways if a fish is pulling. This drastically reduces the size of float needed to prevent a fish from dissapearing into the depths, but is best used with a length of bungee. Even a relatively small hard fighter like a Dogtooth Tuna can dissapear a big Float if the Float is in line. That is a concept drawing for a Float/Chute. The yellow line would be bungee to allow for the 'parachuting' effect. I've made some similar things. We use Heavy Duty webbing or Heavy Duty Nylon Deneer as the Bones of our Floats.

  • @ Don--- What brand of Bungie do You use with your 50' Spectra Cord? Did you buy both from Neptonic Systems?

Both my bungie and vinyl drag line are self made... back after work tonight.
