5mm or 7mm Pursuit Camo for SoCal Winter Temps

  • Greetings everyone in Cali-fornee, I'm just starting out freediving in San Diego and I was planning on a Pursuit Camo wetsuit. Dan's selection of colors are real limited right now in 7mm, only brown. I've checked SST's and it's around 57, 58 degrees now in mid-February. I would think I have a somewhat "normal" tolerance to cold and with some exertion (or excitement) ha, I'd probably be sweat'in. Has anyone here in Southern Cal bought and is using a Pursuit 5 or 7mm. My Q is, is a 7mm Pursuit really necessary for some shallow to moderate depths here in SoCal, mostly around or out of San Diego?

Also, any thoughts on Dan's New brown suits as far as it blending in for offshore reefs, sandy bottoms, kelp, etc.? Any feedback would be much appreciated...

From a color point of view. The brown suit in that pic will not blend with the kelp at or near the surface. The giant kelp in California ranges from golden to sienna and there are none of those tones in that suit. Depending on how deep you are on the reef will determine if you blend in. In shallow there are lots of greens (eel grass) reds/purples/pinks (hard and soft algae), so that brown will stand out there as well.

With that pattern that suit looks like it will blend in on sandy patches with algae and clam holes and deeper parts of a reef.

IMHO a good kelp camo (like it matters btw :rolleyes1::)) would consist of golds/warm browns and pea green.

Bottom line is to get a suit that fits well and is warm. My buddy wears one of those Pursuits and last time I dove with him he was in the water for over 6 hours in water in the high 40's. :@

  • Thanks for the pics Dan, much appreciated! Gotta head off to work right now, caught the new green availability - thank you. Let me get a bit of feedback and /or decide on color and I'll order up upon my return. Thanks again, Terry Hull

  • Yikes! The high 40's, that just sounds cccccold. Sounds like you'd lean towards the green, eh? Say mid 50's, think the 7mm would be overkill? Thanks for the reply...Terry

  • I don't really lean toward either. They will stand out or blend in better in different areas. My buddy has the green and it looks great against the water, but stands out when I'm above and he's on the reef. Blending in doesn't matter when you're shivering.

  • Talk about an R-teest, check this vid - came out pretty sharp. He's got those wispy standouts, almost irridescent with the green, but looks similar to those pinks, whites, lt. grays on rocks when still receiving light. That new green Pursuit , underwater at 30 feet fades neutral and brightens up as splotches blending in through green semi-murky water providing better blending and concealment than its showing out of water. At least thats the way it appeared to me in some of Dan's photos on the forum site. But heres the link for a home do it your-selfer, Interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgZyTO2kI_s&feature=related

While "someone" beached himself on the rocks to warm up & take a nap... :D

  • I'm fine in Dan's ' 5mil but I weigh 200# @ 5'11''. I have dove it for 5 straight hr at 54 degrees without a issue.
I like the green pattern in the weed and the blue for the blue.

    Cheers, Don
