Got out on Monday looking for a little Valentine to be mine and convinced this flattie to come home with me. Followed it up the next morning with a WSB. This white had 2 huge wounds (One on each side) but was getting around pretty good considering. Felt compelled to cull him out of the herd. Hopefully this weather settles and we can get back out there soon.

Cull him out of the herd? So does that mean you saw more of them out there?
Last year I waited till April to start hunting those fish. I might have to start earlier this year
BTW nice spearing Mark :thumbsup2:

Nice fish , was the WSB meat ok?? cant wait start hunting them again ,,, thanks for posting

Did the wounds look like bite or commercial rigging wounds?
-
gill net? good goin on the early cbass
-
I'm thinking possibly net, but not sure. At first I thought it was possibly a tear off from last season but the wound in the first photo doesn't appear consistent with that. Here's a pic of the other side. The meat looked fine behind the wounds, of course I gave most of the fish to my buddy and haven't heard from him since, maybe I should call. LOL

Nice combo.

Well done man! Those are some gnarly wounds for sure.

I was out hunting today and laying at the bottom in 30ft. It reminded me of last year when I dropped down to 20 or 30 ft and found a sleeping 35lb cbass right on the bottom. I took it easily from above. I would imagine a shark or big sea lion could have done the same to your fish. I've seen sea lions with small WSB lots of times. I even saw a BIG knot head throwing a 4 foot shark of some sort around this last week. We thought it had a larger model cbass and followed it around for a while til we saw it was a shark. Never know I guess.

A great case for CSI LA... I think it escaped from BEEK's friend ....the guy with a knife tied to a stick.;)

I shot a coastal white in November with some side damage like that and with a hook in the corner of it's mouth. There were white's schooling nearby, but this was a solo and I felt bad for the poor fella. The meat was a little red around the wound, but the rest looked ok. It's hard to determine what could have inflicted the wound. Another spearfisherman...bad gaff...net...sea lion...harbor seal...shark...other fish...These fish probably encounter all kinds of predators.
