Recent Baja Trip

  • Over spring break, my dad and I went down to our house in Gonzaga, which for those of you who don't know, it is approximately 4 hours south of San Felipe. We have a decent house if you want to call it that, but it is more like a shack. My family has been going down there for 40 years already and I am the third generation of divers to harvest from the local waters.

We had an absolutely amazing trip down there. Cold beer, no wind, no big projects to do on the house, and most of all, fresh fish. The visibility could have been way better, but you take what you can get, and we made do.

So I borrowed a buddy's go pro for the trip to try and get some footage. The card filled up pretty quick, so I didn't get too much good stuff. In the video there are a total of two different spots on two different days. The clip with the bad vis shows a baby cabrilla about 3" in length, you might have to full screen it to see it better, but the visual memory far outweighs what I got on film. I actually saw him twice that dive over a span of about an hour. The clip where I am in very shallow I spooked out a 20-30 pound gulf grouper trying to get a shot in tight quarters, again didn't really come through unless you look for it hard and you can actually see his tail swaying back and forth in the cave. Enjoy!

Via Loreto and coming in from the south- there is no more that I have heard of, but out of Puertecitos from the north, there was six more miles leaving 16 or 17 miles left into Gonzaga. H2O temps were in the mid 60's, but that was a month ago. Leaving to go back in exactly a month and temps are expected to be in the mid 70s.:cool2:

  • I saw that gulfy very clearly. Man I love hole diving. Can't get enough of it nowadays.

Its by far my favorite form of hunting. Not as stealthy and fun as kelp, but much harder than anyone would think. I need to get a 90cm with a 20mm band to take my revenge...

And I think I already told you Daniel, but the gulf my dad is holding up is all thanks to me....

I shot a burrito in a cave (same one that I shot the burrito in in the video, different time), not seeing that gulf tucked back and behind the rock, close to the location where I shot the burrito in the video. Now I have a few solid caves of my own that have held consistently for the past few trips, so things are getting a bit easier.

  • that is a great report...thanks for sharing. also I really like your fillet rig and the fact that it is done in the water.

if you have any, I'd love to see what your house looks like to complete my fantasy life through your report.

dead fish get me through the tough day at the office

  • Absolutely!

First one is the house from the outside
Second one is the view from the front porch.

Inside basically consists of a 10'x10' storage room for outboards and spare tires and what else can't stay outside. There is an open kitchen with a bar, table on the inside, a couple of beds in the corners, and a bathroom shower behind the house (not connected, came later).

The house is bare bones, and up until last easter, no electrial lights ( we now have one in the bathroom). We run a propane stove and fridge.

I'll try and dig up a few more pics later, but right now I'm off diving... :thumbsup2:

Edit: just noticed the pic of the house is pretty old, the bricks now wrap around the house to the left. Better pictures soon..

  • Wow Davis, that is a cool little house...so great for me to see Brian and you diving together.:thumbsup2:
    thanks for sharing the vid.

  • Dang Davis when do I get to come down with you and plug some cave fish. Cortlen can never stop ranting about the trip you took him on and those bay bass you guys caught. Sounds like a magical time and I love the video. How did you mount the camera on your head?

Yea, one of these days I need to get you down there. I used the go pro head mount. Worked great, except it misses quite a bit of the action when in caves and makes a ton of noise when it hits the cave walls. Might get a gun mount for the hole gun I plan on getting. I think the best part of the trip is just getting too drunk and BS-ing with each other. I have some pics..
