A traditional Hybrid is a mix of the ballast allowed by a Beefy Wooden Stock in the back half of the Gun and the very low profile allowed by a Rail Gun in the front end and Muzzle.

In this case, we ran two Carbon fiber stringers the length of the gun. This allowed us to taper the front end of the gun and muzzle to a very low profile. The strength of this Low Profile front end is in the combination of Teak and carbon fiber. That is the Hybrid.

That was Jon's response to the same hybrid question, a few weeks ago on SB. Until then, I too thought that hybrid = wood stock, pipe barrel.

I don't want to dis rail Jon's post but if you look at my first gun I ever built you will see what you just described.
Terry Mass had one early on as well. I'll go into the history on a separate thread some day.
My gun had a telescoping cam lock forward tube and a quick change muzzle already set up with bands.

  • Hi Dan,

I always figured a hybrid was just a description. Some will say a Hybrid Speargun is a gun with which combines different materials ie a Wooden Stock and a Pipe Barrel, others will say that Hybrid refers to the shaping, ie a bulky Mass towards the rear of the gun combined with a tapered barrel and muzzle towards the front of the gun. I prefer using the Biological definition..

    "An offspring resulting from Cross-Breeding"

In this case I combined Carbon fiber and teak to add strength and rigidity that allows a very tapered muzzle.. The muzzle on this gun is 3.5cm x 4.5cm at the Band Slot....

That's our new Composite Ulusub Handle. Solid Glass/Nylon.

This gun is a 15Ocm. I've been putting it through the paces testing it rigourously. It's a smooth tracker. Very maneuverable.

    15Ocm Tip to Butt

  • Great looking gun. What size and length spear does it take and how many bands?

    I need a Tuna gun.

  • That gun in the Picture is:
    15Ocm Tip to Butt
    fit for 3 x 16mm Bands
fit for 7.5mm or 8mm Shaft

We make a 16Ocm and a 17Ocm which are both fit for
    4 x 16mm Bands and 8mm Shafts.

The 17Ocm is what I use for Tuna. It's not a 6 band 1Omm Shaft Cannon.. It's not a designated Giant Yellowfin Gun, but it is a Gun which you can use for Wahoo etc. and Tuna..

  • Hey John, are those rosy jobfish? If so, very nice work!

  • Hi Kolt,

They're a close cousin. Silver Throated Jobfish, aka, Crimson Jobfish, Lehi, etc. Normally they are real deepwater fish. We had this week of big upwelling and heaps of krill and it created for some amazing diving with lots of unusual catches. I found a group of these amongst a huge shoal of Kala/Unicornfish and small trevally. They were in about 1OOft of water, but I was able to bring them up a bit with a flasher. Really nice eating. Now my wife is dissapointed when I come hom with anything else..

  • I am the proud owner of an ulusub. These guns are truly amazing. They are works of art. I very highly recommend these guns!

    Beautiful work btw.

  • what size and configuration are you using Spearhunter? I have been debating about starting a build of just getting an ulusub for my BW gun.

they are beautiful and have a great reputation.

    best rashguard ever too

    i like to spear fish

  • When is the hybrid gonna be able to purchase? I have shot just ins ulusub. I love how it tracks. Similar in shape to my socal tracker.

  • I have a 125cm enclosed track rigged with a floatline and breakaway. It is a rear handle version. I use the gun for inshore work and lower viz. It is big enough to get the job done on almost any type of CA fish until you get to the outer kelp or paddies. It is perfect for shore diving. I switch to my wong hybrid for hunting seabass exclusively.

I bought the gun at the factory closeout sale he had last year. It is probably the best spearfishing related investment I ever made. I absolutely love my wong as well so don't get me wrong. There was a rush of orders and a mix-up at the factory which was not their fault and they were out of the gun I requested. They offered a free upgrade to a larger gun or to make me another one (I would have to wait). Since I wasn't in a hurry, I opted to wait. They still got the gun to me within the original promised time-frame! They also sent me a reel to apologize for the confusion. Talk about service! I have never mounted the reel but I gave it to a friend who loves it.

The gun came to my office right before I went on a trip. I opened the box and pulled it out and thought it was a work of art. I have a JBL Elite series halibut gun (love it) and I have riffe euro series guns. However, this gun took it to a whole new level. Comparing it to my Wong, the craftsmanship is comparable. I have the utmost respect for Daryl and I swear by my Wong hybrid so this is high praise. The lines on the gun are beautiful and the handle fit really well in my hand. The gun is very well balanced and the enclosed track shoots like a laser. I can shoot any type of reef fish out to 15 feet comfortably and nail them. I went carp shooting with it and shot at least 50 carp in a day. It is a little too long for super low viz conditions.

For a production gun, it feels like a custom. My buddy bought and refinished a Gil Gacula custom and the lines are nearly identical. Another friend has a 165cm version mid-handle for paddies and he loves it.

For the price it is truly tough to beat.

  • Nope Joe, that guy is living in his own world. He's telling everyone that he paid us and that I'm making the whole thing up, etc. etc. One of us must be mistaken.. But, let's keep this about making nice guns and catching nice dinners.

    for example..

The 2Oft swell we had at the beginning of the week finally calmed down and I had promised the guys helping to build our new factory one for the pot this morning. Went out on a long Drift in the Deep looking for speedsters but nothing showed. On the way in I took off one band and swam into this big cave to see if anyone was home..
