I have to get a yacht from Key West to Cancun and need some pointers.
First: How is spearfishing there. Best spots, rules, etc.
Second: Should we stop in Cuba? Pros/Cons/Cautions.
Thanks!

If you have the possibility to stop in Cuba for sure, as long as you're not pressured for time. You'll most likely dock at marina Hemingway. Their fees are supposed to be very reasonable. Once there you're 30 minutes drive west of Havana. Sounds like you're going to get paid for having fun.
Not pressed for time but for fuel. Need to calculate all that. Been hearing bad things bout the diesel in Cuba. Not sure how many miles it is from KWest to Cancun. Boat is a 2012 italian 64 footer express. Just delivered. The guy promissed me a week off divin in Cancun, Ilha Mujeres. If anyone knows the area, hit me back please.
Just looked it up. Seems like Marina Hemingway is a good place to stop for a day, then circumnavigate westward and spearfish along the way.
This trip will make for some good photos.
oh man that sounds like a great time
sounds like a badass trip! how many days do you expect it to take to get there with spearing stops?
not sure, a week down and a week in cancun maybe...

Thanks guys. Not a for sure yet. Still in contract negotiation. Has to b worth my while.
Spearalina and I were in Cancun a couple weeks ago. Isla Mujeres had a lot of protected areas and snorkel boats made divers wear foam preservers so they couldnt go down and touch the reef. Since she broke her foot days before the flight, we didn't actively pursue spearing opportunities there, but the ceviche was awesome. Tulum is nearby and we heard has spearing charters. Not sure if this link helps but we found it researching for our next visit down there.
