Shark Attacks Kayak Off Cambria Coast (Central California)

Warnings were posted in Cambria after a great white shark bit down on a kayak off the coast moonstone beach this past Saturday.

The bite left a 24' gash in the kayak. According to fish and game over the years there have been several credible great white sittings on the central coast. Mike Harris, an environmental scientist for the department says, "to me it seems reasonable that there could be more white sharks in the area, and if there's more sharks there's going to be more interactions with sea otters, kayakers or surfers. So it could be that there is an increase in sharks numbers in the area but the data is not there yet to really support that."

The department of fish and game says locally they'll be doing studies within the next year to address the increase in shark activity.

  • Dan that is exactly what I was thinking...that yak will cease to float in about 15-20 minutes.

i have shot a nail gun at a kayak once from about 2.5' away and it didnt penetrate...that bite had INSANE amounts of force behind it

  • Hau actually did foam up considerable portions of his Hobie adventure..he flooded the entire interior of the yak and it still floated..pretty impresssive

  • I have had an interesting encounter south of Piedras Blancas North of Cambria on our 12 foot aluminum boat about 7 or 8 years ago. It was foggy and we where hand lining for rockfish about 200 to 300 yards off of shore when something big breached next to our boat. only saw its dorsal fin and its back but it didn't show its tail fin. It was about twice the size of our boat and grey. It definitely made our blood pressure rise. We never knew if it was a shark or a whale of some sort. They are out there.
