Okay so my girl read about lead poisoning and has outright banned my smelting. I told her I'd wear a filter but I don't know what I need. I have a level 3 mask I think from my fiberglassing days. Does that provide sufficient protection? What do I need. Thanks guys
What kind of mask/filter for safe lead smelting

here is everything you need to know
Lead on the Job - A Guide for Workers - New York State Department of HealthWear a clean, properly fitted air purifying respirator equipped with P100 filters (purple) as a minimum level of protection, in all work areas that have lead dust or fumes. Shave to get the required fit.

Thanks George. That is a great resource. I'll take my mask to home depot and see if there are p100 filters for it

So no more balcony smelting? Or are you going to hand out filters to your neighbors?

just stand up wind...
-
Hahaha yeah. My whole operation was shut down
I have moved from downtown so the balcony of death is no longer an option.
I am home next week so I will be looking for a safe remote location. Probably end up at my folks house in Kendall. They have a lot of land

what are you smelting?
-
lead, mostly scrap from found dive weights or tire shop weights
-
Gotcha. Is it even worth messing with?
-
Lead isn't cheap, I made 2 dive belts by smelting my own stuff and it cost me next to nothing. That being said, I am a mechanic and collected wheel weights. Specialty weights can also be expensive/hard to find. If you know what you need and have the means to make it it is very easy.

I have gotten a bucket or so of wheel lead at a time form Midas. They have to pay to get rid of it so they were glad

Just put a box fan behind you (upwind) while your working. The old guy that taught me seems to have turned out alright..... haha

Anyone know of reasons NOT to use battery lead?
