I just ordered my first float line. what material do you use to make a loop through the gun stock?
Simple question.

most people use 400lb mono or dyneema...i use dyneema with a double fisherman' knot to make the loop

I use 400lb mono, but that's a really cool demo Judah, going to have to memorize that one.
-
one of the best knots out there...
I also tied on a tuna clip so I actually clip onto that...i should have mentioned that initally
-
sweet. Stopped at west marine on my way home, and they gave me a few ft of dyneema free.
-
Judah thats a awesome web page bro!!

I just practiced the double fisherman's knot. that's a nifty little trick. :thumbsup2:
to continue on with my "simple questions," If I drill a hole in the butt of the gun, what should I put in it to keep it sealed? I don't want to buy a whole epoxy kit for one hole.
-
home depot makes the little syringe kits, would be more than enough and only a couple of bucks.
-
Hell yeah George. Glad to share with you all. I have spent hours on there.
-
Ive used those little plastic things people use to keep cables together. Not sure what the actual name is. Cost me a buck at walmart.

Thank you for sharing the knot detail.

Zip ties!
I use those for everything.

400lb mono, doubled over with a crimp. on Riffes you have to enlarge the hole a bit, just put some teak oil in there with a qtip.

Yep. I just bought a package of those and some carabiners and I use those two items to clip everything including my speargun.

I'd be curious to know what kind of load a zip tie can take

The best way to attach a float line to a gun is to put a nail in the stock, put a loop in the line and hook over the nail, then bend the nail as pictured below. Unless you have a Mako speargun, in which case you don't have to do anything, the float line will stay connected to the gun by good customer service.
Seriously using a zip tie to attach a float line to a gun is a bad idea. Initially I thought you were joking. Depending on the angle and suddenness of a pull a zip tie will open right up. Also if something is of value to you don't use any carabiner or snap without a locking feature. They will all open up accidentally at some point. The only one I trust is this stainless steel snap, it has a lock nut.

Or the tuna clip included at no extra cost

Even more so when the whole gun is at no extra cost. Regardless the Tuna clip is so bulky and for tuna. Isn't this so much more elegant and efficient?

For big game, the zip tie wouldn't be that practical but for clipping my camera and just having my $20 gargae gun clipped to something when shooting the small(er) reef fish, it holds fairly well. There is more pull from the waves coming back in than the fish haha. Before that I used to just hold my gun. When I upgrade then I will look into a locking system like you showed pictured.

According to some googling...standard cable ties have around 50lbs of tensile strength.
