One more Trini

  • Welcome man! I'm currently in Grenada in medical school. Hoping to make a trip down to TNT to spear in a few months!

Let me know two weeks before you come or more and maybe we can organise a trip. What's your comfortable hunting depth? Are you comfortable shooting wood guns? If so, maybe you can borrow rather than have to travel with your gun.

  • Kahalel was not saying anything bad about trini diving bro, you guys have more fish than any other island i know of...I was saying your vis is bad and it is compared to up island as we dont get the massive river run offs you get locally and from the huge South American rivers only a few miles off your shores that cloud your vis... Its like the Cali boys and their massive fish in the kelp gardens, no way your catching me in shark infested waters with 10-20 foot vis as the norm shooting HUGE fish  I am a very spoilt fella though, if it is less than 20ft I aint going and obviously I dont have the talent for it ..lol... ;)

I beg to differ. When it comes to near shore diving, Trinidad may not have the crystal clear water like The Bahamas or many of the islands higher up the chain (including the sister isle Tobago) but it does have clear water. Its all about timing...the time of the year, the phase of the moon, the tides and the area u dive. I could go into more detail as to the different types of water we get and why but all in all, if you want to get fish you have to be or become a better all round hunter to spearfish in Trinidad because alot more factors come into play than just heading to a spot and diving.

I shot my two cobia over 60 pounds in 10 foot and less viz. You get some visibility here, it's all relative. Compared to the rest of the Caribbean we average dirtier even on clear days. We do have a lot of big fish though, but you need to know where to look for them.

  • Nix thats why you guys have all my respect, I just dont want anything that bad...hhahahahahah  Maybe one day I might wana learn that skill set but not now :)
Never shot A cobia but I hear they are some of the hardest fighting fish, any tips to share about you fighting them?

Like any big fish get the first shot right. Luckily cobia are curious and slow moving. If your lying on the bottom or just still they get curious. Shoot aiming for the spine behind the gills or behind the eye. You won't always stone them but after that wrestle them away from structure. They like to swim around rocks or any structure to get cut off. Be patient and don't try to grab them early in the gills. You might get your hands in and then get your wrist broken. If you have a second gun shoot it again in the head. They're strong bastards.

Generally I find that lying on the bottom is the best strategy for most fish in dirty water(and in clear too). You'll only get to shoot them if you don't look like a threat. The hard thing in dirty water is lying on the bottom down deep not being able to see a fish approaching or in the distance that makes the whole area seem less fishy and more spooky. Don't worry about sharks; Trinidad doesn't have too many. Tobago has more sharks but the water is clear.

  • Cool advice Nix, I was referring to the Cali guys in low vis and their great white sharks :@ , this is my neighborhood, sharks smarks in the Caribbean bro :D I deal with them all the time not worried shallow or blue..

I do 80% of my spearing of a kayak. It's good fun, good exercise and you can get to a huge number of spots to dive once it's within 5km from shore. It might be me or one of my brothers your friend is talking about.

  • Welcome Nix. According to your descriptions, spearfishing in Trinidad is very similar to Venezuela, where I spear. I live in Caracas and mostly spear at La Guaira. We have good spots, but quite deep and oftenly current is ripping. Visibility normally is up to 10-15 feet. When we get 30-40 feet, then it's wahoo time!

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

hey Nix, will def hit you up if I do make it down your way. Im comfortable to about 60 and yes. I love shooting wood guns, that would work out great as travelling in and out of Grenada with guns tends to be harder for students like myself.

You ever make trips to Grenada?'

  • Nix I was told you got some monster Jew fish on that kayak of yours, true story?

  • Welcome Nix.

I have many fond memories of TnT. The girls especially. Unfortunately that was before my diving days, and I never made in the water.

I will likely pass through again on my way to, and back from Guyana. If you are up for a dive let me know, and I'll add a few days to my trip so we can link up. Will likely be middle December or March/April

Where on the Island are you? I have a few places I can stay around PoS.

Yeah, I've shot a few good ones. I'm not sure if it's politically correct for me to put up pics of it here but it's completely legal.

  • I'm always up for a dive. You'll have to let me know when you can come and we can make some plans. I live in Cascade near the Savannah.
