Foam filling a lifeguard can?

  • One of the floats me and nate have sitting around in our place is one of my old lifeguard rescue cans from my lifeguarding days. I drilled it out and permanently mounted a flag and sealed it with AB pool compound putty but it still leaks a bit.

What are the chances of being able to buy a can or something of expanding foam to fill this thing up with and not have to deal with it leaking anymore? I know it will make the float heavier but will it make it more or less buoyant?

  • The canned spray foam will not work well, too low a density. You can get the proper stuff at a boat building supplier.
What fish are you hunting? How deep the float goes determines the foam density.

foam weights more than air ,right , so when you replace the air in the float with foam it will weight more relative to its displacement ,so it will "float" less ,and sit lower in the water .

i would use 6- 8 # a=b foam you can get it from tap plastics and most boat building supply houses

Its mainly our beach diving float for when I swim out from the beach, I dont have a reel rigged on any of my guns so its got a 50 ft floatline right to the gun handle. I doubt it will be ever going very deep or getting tombstoned since Im only hunting fish in 25-40 feet of water most of the time.

edit - dan, thanks for that link. You got the DIY stuff down pretty damn good sir:thumbsup2:

In that case 5lb A+B foam will be fine, and if it smacks you in the back of the head when a big Hoo runs, it wont
hurt as much as the denser mix's. Just follow Dan's tutorial thread.

  • @Dan--- How in tarnatins do you keep the Float Right Side up since it has a Top Heavy Flag?? JUst curious... Somehow-- I imagined it to be unstable in the water?

What did you do to it to avoid this 'flopping over'??

  • There's a lead weight inside the lifeguard can on the bottom, embedded in the foam.

Andrew, for beach diving don't put too much effort into the lifeguard can. When filled with foam it's heavy and you'll get tired of carrying it out of the water. The lifeguard can is good for hooking up in series when hunting big tuna. Ideal for beach diving is the Banksboard, and the next best thing is a DIY boogie board.

  • Cool Ill keep that in mind. For right now I added some 5200 to the flag mount to hopefully seal it up good. I havent used it too much lately since I take my kayak to the beach most of the time now.
