1250 Hybrid

  • Been a while since I have posted any guns up due to being extremely busy renovating my house, but this is a gun i have been working on for the last few weeks, some spec’s –
    1.25m o/all length
Hybrid design – carbon ‘speardiver’ barrel, African Padauk rear
Rear handle/euro gun, open graphite track, open muzzle, neptonics mech, JBL handle (used this for the in-built safety since this gun is being donated to a spearfishing comp), 7mm speardiver shaft.

So here’s some pics of the build – Enjoy -

Gear all ready to go –

Design cut out and barrel fitted in to blank –

Rounding over begun and more shaping to give it some curves (sorry for the rubbish photo) –

More shaping (this process took me a long time) –

Once I was happy with the shape I went on and poured my graphite track, now I cut my tracks out with a slightly oversize bit for a trigger mech and then route the trigger area also, this pic shows the track poured –

Track dry and flushed with top of blank –

And the trigger cut out, you can see why I oversize the track as when I route out the trigger, the area the trigger is set into is completely sealed with epoxy –

Trigger set in and pinned –

    Handle recessed in –

So this is what the gun looks like o/all –

Finally progress as of this afternoon – first coat of epoxy on the gun –

Hopefully the gun will be coated enough to ballast in the next few days, then all will be completed (just in time for the comp on the 10th Feb)

  • Love the artistic curved shaping at the front, a friend of mine in the UK has a jig'ed laminate that the reminds me of your gun. Beautiful workmen ship...lots of hrs there.

    Cheers, Don

    That would be foxfish' hybrid?

Beautiful gun this is, love the curved stock.
How do you make the hole for the barrel?

I am about to build my first hybrid this winter and I am not really clear about how to make the hole for the barrel...?
    Should I rout or drill?
I have a 30 mm barrel - should I make the hole 2 mm oversize to allow for glue or is it better with a 30 mm hole?

Got any pics of the foxfish hybrid - would love to see it.

I use a full round router bit to make the hole - the barrel runs right down to the trigger so would be impossible to do with a drill.

Keep the hole exact size also - i used a Speardiver 28.4mm barrel and a 28.4mm router bit.

  • And the gun is finished!!

Ballasted it yesterday, just took a little in the back under the handle to sink slightly muzzle down, the gun is ready just in time for next weekend.

    Enjoy

If I built a similar gun again I would probably slim it down a bit more but that would in turn require more ballast.

  • Cheers Don

Just under #5 without the shaft, lighter than i was expecting!! (just checked on cheap bathroom scales so may not be super accurate!!)

  • Wow!!! I am blown away!!
It is a beautiful gun. Such a harmonious blend of organic and machine. The cf tube is really stunningly juxtaposed with the natural shapes of the wood is really amazing

That is the prettiest speargun I have ever seen

The barrel is epoxied into the timber, however i run the barrel all the way to the trigger for strength and next time i'm going to run it to the end of the trigger and fill the last 4" of the barrel then fix the trigger and handle into it - this is overkill but gives me piece of mind.

If you did screw it in, you would have to fill the barrel with a waterproof foam first - a few guys do this on 'take down' hybrids.

Thanks for the positive comments guys, the transition between barrel and timber is normally the part on a hybrid i don't like, i personally don't like the timber stopping square, just doesn't seem to flow nicely.

    Cheers
