  • Hello everyone my names Jack and I’m a spear fishermen out in Hawaii. About me I’m a proud marine veteran. And moved to Hawaii after the Marines. Due to life events I will be moving to LA in the next 6 months so I hope to get to meet some spearos out in SoCal. I dive to about 35 ft. and am working on my bottom time. I see spearfishing as a way of life and a great hobby. Hope to make some new friends on here

  • Its cold here in LA. A 5 mm suit will keep you warm and the water visibility is far from Oahu. Up north I had 1-2 foot viz while abalone diving. In LA I have seen 5 to 40 foot depending on the day. Kelp is also different to dive in. Takes some getting use too but you will like it. You can hide better when stocking fish.

  • Hooking fish what size guns you guys use out there i have a 110 Hammerhead with reel and a 75 3 prong gun.

The same guns that you would use there, 110 and up for game fish. 110 and under for reef fish.
Out at San Clemente Island (60miles offshore) we get 100' vis on a good day.

June is when our season really gets rolling on pelagic fish.

What Don said. I have a 90 riffe and a 6 foot 3 prong. I would like to get into a 110 or 120 eventually but you will be set for most diving out here with your 110 and 75. Your 75 with a different tip would be a great beach halibut gun and Nor Cal rock fish gun. The 110 seems to be what most guys dive with around here though.

What do you guys use your 3prongs on? i have and 8' 3 prong but most likey wont be able to bring it with me. hence the3 prong gun:grin:.

  • I will be honest I do not use my 3 prong much. I took some perch with it. I think it would be great for scorpion fish at night or low viz water. There was a guy who recently took a 40lb white sea bass and a mess of other fish and won a pole spear competition recently. It was a very impressive haul.

  • I'm new to diving out here but I have seen both. I don't think it really matters. They all kill fish. What do you prefer?

  • The main thing about Cali diving is you need to be able to not freeze, good wetsuit , 5mm+, and not get tangled in kelp, so a reel or floatline w no float and be as streamlined as possible
