Hello from Dayton, OH???

  • Yea, that's where I live now, but I grew up in San Diego and spent a lot of time in the water there, Catalina and down in Baja. I really miss Freediving and Spearfishing and honestly wanted to find a site where I could keep in touch with the sport and maybe get info on any trips that may be coming up.

My wife and I are also interested in investing in property outside the US and were really leaning towards Costa Rica till they restricted spearfishing so now maybe Belize.

Anyhow, looking forward to hearing about any trips to Baja or elsewhere that need another diver.

    Tim

  • Amazing. I'm from Cincinnati.....a long time ago. And I live in Belize. Better here than there....spearfishing anyway. Welcome.

Tell me about spearfishing in Belize? Do you have to be a "native" or?

  • Hey Timinator;
Some of us Buckeyes have been welcomed here in the past. (Thank you Dan).
I was born/raised on a farm in Ohio on the Ross / Pickaway county line way back before cell phones. :@
Don't understand your movin to Dayton unless it was to skydive at GCSPC outside of Xenia. Thats what I did in 1970. There was a very exciting wreck dive in a rock quarry north of Jamestown. :rolleyes1: or you could freedive the Ohio river. ( Sorry, couldn't resist).
This is THE BEST FREEDIVE /SPEARFISHING forum in the world IMO. Many friendly, knowledgable spearos here. Our family grows every day. Hope you enjoy it here as much as I have all these years.
    Welcome

No you don't have to be a native. Tourists can spearfish here. Except for Buckeyes....:D

We have a long barrier reef and three atolls here. Lot of reef fish and also blue water.
I live about midway on the coast near the town of Dangriga. It's 16 miles out to the barrier reef. There are fish inshore here but the vis is usually only about 10-15 feet. The reef is rarely less than 60 feet vis.

The water temp here is 77 or so in the winter and 82-84 in the summer. We do have a shitload of fire coral so you should wear a full suit of some type.

  • Thanks for replies. Yea, Dayton isn't by an ocean but it's nestled around one of the best deer hunting spots in the US. Since we moved here 13 years ago, I've taken up archery again and get to fling arrows daily here on our farm and down on our other piece of property in southern Ohio. But, I still miss big water. We have a 3 acre pond/lake on our property that I dive in and the family swims in. So I still get to get wet from time to time. But 25' comes up quickly!

Why would anybody move to Dayton, well other than the hunting, they made us an offer money wise that we couldn't refuse. My wife works and has "climbed" the corporate ladder. I've been retired since we moved here and hunting and fishing isn't a bad way to spend the days. Other than family, some friends, and freediving, I don't miss Southern California at all. Most of the stuff I enjoyed growing up there you can't do anymore or it's just so crowded or expensive you don't want to. It's a big world with lot's of stuff to see.

  • Yep, Ohio has changed a lot too since I left there in 1977.
Deer were scarce, believe it or not, back then. We were really stoked to see one while driving out in the country drinking beer on Friday night, which is what we did for fun back then.
By the 90s, they were like rabbits. And now there are coyotes, which I guess came in when the deer population climbed?
I heard in the late 90s on the radio, while at my parents house in Lawrenceburg, IN that in Ohio alone that year there were over 5000 deer related car accidents.
I would have a hard time moving back there though. Once I saw the sea, there was no turning back. Glad you like it though. I was from Harrison, a little town on I74. The last town in Ohio before you cross into Indiana heading to Indianapolis.
I hope you're still a Charger fan. the Bengals suck. haha. I still root for them but it's a disappointment every year.

  • Yep, lot's of coyotes here. Did I mention I lover to varmint hunt too!

Always been a Charger fan, I will never root for the Bengals, ever.

I know where you were from, I'm really not that far. I'm south west of Dayton about a half hour in Germantown. About the same distance again from Hamilton.

So, tell me more about property in Belize. Best areas for bang for the buck and especially where I don't want to be. We're going down this summer for a little R& R.

  • There is a lot of property here. The population is only 300,000.
Beach front, jungle type, mountain, you name it. All price ranges too. The beach front is expensive. Like....almost Hawaii expensive.

You, me and Hau, the three musketeers :thumbsup2: I was born on Lockbourn AFB in Columbus and spent a month there before shipping out to New London Conn.
Twenty years ago I dove a Caddy cross country and went out of my way to stop in Columbus. It was snowing when I pulled off the freeway at 2am, woke the wife up and said here it is honey. Than I turned left under the overpass and headed East bound to the Catskill mountains.

    Cheers, Don

So I guess you're not coming for X-Mas this year!

Hank, I couldn't send you a private message, but what do you think of this piece of property?

Prime Belize Real Estate- BEACHFRONT beautiful house and lot in Foreshore Area Dangriga Town! No.1395 |

  • It's a good location for spearfishing. You're only about 10 miles south of where I live. The reef is not too far out from there.
But Dangriga isn't a touristy area. Only a couple hotels. It's more an old fishing town turned commerce centre for Stann Creek district. Lot of stores for everything.
Security can be an issue there. PM me for more details.

I can't IM from the site. Not sure why, I'll ask one of the mods.

I found another too which I've asked for more information on from the Realtor. Not exactly what we want but getting closer. I was wondering about security in the area, but I've had to deal with that before. We're not looking for touristy, we don't mind doing our own thing. We live way out in the country now with no neighbors.

Anyhow, I'll get the IM thing going here soon. Here's the other place.

Two story house (two apartments) on the beach! Hopkins/Sittee Point area No.1404 |

  • Hopkins is less developed. Sittee River area is nice. I have an acre about a mile up the Sittee River. Persanally, I don't want to live on, or near the beach. A lot of maintenance keeping everything clean with the salt making dirt and dust stick to all your windows, cars etc. There is a boat ramp about 150 yards from my lot. If I ever retire from shrimp, I'll build a house there.

But if you're really looking at buying here, come and spend some time to look around. A lot of it is just personal choice. I have a lot in San Pedro which has a $$$$ view of the reef. But I don't want to live there. A lot of people do though. I have 6 acres on the Western Lagoon also. Really nice lot but there is no power or water and it's 3 miles off a 10 mile dirt road. I have a friend who lives down there but I don't want to drive 1 1/2 hours to buy groceries.

  • Hank, you're crushing my dream of being on the water! You're right, I need to get down there and am going to do so. I have a bunch more to learn before flying down and bumming around for a month though. I should probably let my wife know too.

  • You need to listen to the Jerry Jeff Walker song, "Just Another Gringo in Belize"
"sounds llke a pretty goddamn good life to me...." And it is. You just gotta get used to being outside the US in a developing country. It takes a few years. First you'll be really stoked, "WOW, this is great" . Then about a year later, "shit, it's hard to get ANYTHING done here". then after 3 or 4 years, "it's just Belize..." and you're good to go.:thumbsup2:

Edited once, last by hank ().

  • Yea, I've been "just another gringo" before. No problem there. OK, how about views from the mountain range back over the ocean? I searched and searched and couldn't find any properties or lots like that. Is the mountain range too far west? How about a stupid gringo question; what is the electrical there is it 110V/220V at 60 hertz or something different? No one would ever mistake me for a tree-huger but I do speak solar/wind fairly fluently something I'm seeing used on lot's of places there.

And the good news, my wife told me to pound sand (actually not that nicely) about going down there solo and checking things out. Then she said she was just kidding and thought it was a good idea. I may come down and try and find a place to rent for the summer then spend the summer down there with our son and have the wife come down a couple times over the summer and check things out too.

Got to go sit in a tree now. Rut is almost over and I'm still without a buck.
