Spearfishing in the Dominican Republic

  • Greetings to everyone from luperon in the dominicanšŸ‘‹šŸ¼

My name's Dylan and i discovered the sport of spearfishing 2 years ago when I moved here.

Trying to find someone else who goes spearfishing as I find there are a lot of dominican spearos here but all the ones I've met only do it to a certain degree, shooting enough small fish in shallow water to feed themselves and their family for a day.

I still don't consider myself a pro at all, always more to learn, yet I find that the better fish are deeper(due to lots of over fishing in shallow waters with gill nets)

I've shot a good amount of snappers ranging in size here and have seen some absolute giants swimming in these waters

Because of this my self taught diving has lead me to hunt deeper, ranging on average 50-70ft,mostly for snappers but I'm not picky when it comes to good sized good eating fish.hoping to meet others that share the passion for it and im always down to dive with others regardless of experience

  • Yesterday's dive was a wild one.

Headed out around 10 to be greeted by 20 knot winds and terrible visibility.still tried my luck but had a band break at around the 20 minute mark so called it and headed in.after making up two new 16mm bands i headed out again in the afternoon.the winds had died down enough to dive a further section of reef.

Got to the spot and made a drop down the wall to around 65-75ft.

Just off the bottom I saw a really nice mutton, curiously approaching, and tried my best to not stare and just get to the bottom.he came right at me and I shot him.clearly wounded and swimming in circles I saw my shaft hadn't gone all the way through and slipped right out the fish.

A short sprint and I managed to get a hold of it and headed for the surface.

11bls cleaned and a new pb.

This season is gearing up to be a great onešŸ”„šŸ¤˜šŸ»
