Old School “Mae West” Breakaway Rig

  • I’ve come across this set up in a few older publications. The most recent being:
Foraging Along the California Coast; Peter Howorth 1977

Apparently this set up was used for Black Sea Bass in California before they became a protected species. I was curious if anyone uses something similar and for what species.

    Mike

  • looks pretty cool, kinda of hybrid between a float rig and a lift bag...i wonder if the est has any ability to handle depth or if it is just intended to help you locate the speared fish?

    i like to spear fish

  • Iya Diver used something like it for tuna but his had a parachute on it also to make more drag.

He would shoot tuna on scuba.

    Davie Peguero

  • Looks cool.

I have that same NAVY a new and older model life vest. I will look at my vest's when I get back to Miami but I doubt they can take any depth what so ever.

•Man we have it easy today.

    .Larry O M. . .

  • Iya's setup was an inflatable co2 parachute... but still attached to the Riffe reel on his gun.

This one is basically a breakaway popper float setup. Convenience of a reel gun, fighting power of a float, and potential pitfalls of both! Can't imagine using anything like this. With the convenience of carrying a spare popper float on my back, this design seems unreasonably risky. Progressive for its time, but slightly obsolete now. If anything, I'd attach a popper float to the end of my reel gun in case of reel failure.

Cool find ladiver, you've got some awesome archives. ;)

  • Poppers work great .....Here's one on Double Trouble Camo'ed by a GF's nylon stocking.(for good luck).;)
and one I use on my Kelp Belt reel (shown inflated).
    They were made by Dacor.
    Cheers, Don

    Don,
Is you popper float rigged between your shooting line and floaltine/reelline? It looks like its attached to your snubber. Anyhow, great pics! Bad ass.

Hi Mike, the Dacor popper is attached with a Apha Grade Ti 3mm pin. The front has a velcro patch, a mono 300# trip line is looped to a adjustable down rigger clip.
I can trip the float with a hard pull on the trip line and float the gun, when the popper is activated the
popper rotates 180 degrees and forms a ball behind the butt.

My top shaft is full brake away in blue water and is powered by 2 to 4 bands depending on shaft size.
    and the fish I'm hunting.
The bottom shaft is 42' x1/4'' pulled by a 15 or 20mm band, I have shot this gun with a 3/8 shaft and 700lbs
of 300% 5/8 when hunting Black Marlin.
In French Poly I keep a custom 306 PH on the bottom shaft when hunting the blue.
I sometimes can land two fish on a breathhold or save a fish I may have lost to a torn out slip tip.
The top shaft can group 4'' shots @ 25' off the tip without a enclosed track.;)
    Cheers, Don

    Don,
Can you post a pic of the setup? I would like to put something similar on my WSB gun for the spring. Thanks for sharing.

  • Don,
    That was one ugly speargun:toast:

I love this gun it's like having a 300 Weatherby and 22 long welded together. I love taking calico bass for tacos with my bottom shaft, and having a 50# White sea bass swim up to check out the calico.:D

Nothing is worse than missing a shot on a small speeding tuna and having a nice fish circle your fin tips.
I get a lot of stone head shots on fish that think I'm unloaded.:D
    Cheers, Don
