Wetsuit Help!

  • I need a suit soon and I'm not sure what to get. Open cell? Closed cell? Brand? I tried on a riffe suit yesterday and it felt good, but is it warm? Also the riffe suit is pricey.

  • That depends on your type of diving, Freediving= open W. Temp 1 mm = tropical waters (In Baja a lycra suit is just enough during the summer months) 26 to 15 Centigrades 3 mm. less than 15 Centigrades = 5 mm or thicker. Cammo is just for looks.

    I'm a Speardiver, not a freediver

  • divers direct has a 3mm suit that a few guys i know use,, and supposedly they take it back if it rips...
i would make the drive up to florida freedivers if you can, they are nice and you can take all the time u need trying the suits on and they have a pretty wide selection and i think good prices, also dans gettin wetsuits together i believe, ive seen them in person they are pretty sharp

  • What about Dan's suits ? the camo pattern looked good but I don't know if he is selling them yet?

  • I say go custom with diveskin.net . You don't have to try it on to see if it fits because it was made for you. You can pick any color and style you want and best part is it costs as much or cheaper than most normal suits. In South Florida a 3mm wetsuit is enough but skinny guys might need 5mm.

Ditto... A custom suit is the only way to go, unless you are shaped like the person that the wetsuit makers use to fashion there suits.

  • Dan I wish I could wait till you get yours. Hau showed me one for them tonight and I really like it. But I am ready to get back in the water asap and dont have a full suit.

  • Thanks for the help guys I ended up going to Austin's and getting the Riffe 3mm Blue Cryptic Camo Wetsuit. Hope to test it out this weekend if the weather is good.

  • jbrewer, I read through this thread again and I don't think we've been very helpful providing you with information. It's a little late now but you can find my opinion on what makes a good freediving wetsuit here http://spearfishing.world/wetsuits/1350-our-wetsuits.html

Basically what's preferred is a 2 piece suit, with open cell on the inside and Lycra or nylon on the outside. Camo IMO is not a big deal, it's more eye appeal for the diver than anything else. It's important that the suit have an anatomical cut ie. have extra pieces that make it up so it resembles the shape of a human body better. Some suits on the market are square and certain areas need to stretch much more than others to fit the body. Durability is another factor that will become apparent over time. Care must be taken with the open cell suit when putting on and taking off. Any damage is most likely to occur at this point from pulling too hard on the neoprene, which BTW the more flexible and comfortable it is, the less strong it is.

I've read some reports of the Riffe suit coming apart early on. I can't speak from personal experience with regards to their 3mm, but I wasn't impressed with their 1mm so I can believe it http://spearfishing.world/wets…fe-1mm-top-and-pants.html Also the Riffe 3mm suits were pricey at $450, I see that they dropped to $332 but that's still a nice chunk of change.

  • I talked to a couple of people that had the earlier Riffe suits and they said the in sides damaged really easy, but they now have the newer one and said the hold up a lot better.

I'll keep it posted on how it holds up.
