Best secure SS quick release snap?

  • I'm looking for a quick release snap to use with an anchor line. The problem is that I don't trust anything I've seen so far. Snaps like this one can open up on their own unexpectedly. I once almost lost a kayak like this.

The only secure "snap" that I trust is the quick link.

But the problem with it is that eventually the threads will rust and the nut will seize. Plus it takes a little too long to secure for when doing it numerous times throughout the day.

  • I assume that you want it in stainless. Be mindful of stuff with springs, because even stainless and brass fasteners sometimes have regular carbon steel springs. Is this an anchor for your boat, or something smaller like a kayak? How "quick acting" does it need to be? By that, I mean do you need to open it immediately from in the water without tools, or just something to take out when you store the boat at home?

If it's the latter, then why not a standard shackle?

  • It's for my boat.

My boat doesn't have a cleat for the anchor line. The closest thing to an anchor attachment point is the the stainless steel eye for the trailer winch, which is obviously on the outside of the boat in the front. My only solution is to keep a short line attached to this eye, then clip it to knots that I put in the anchor line in intervals corresponding to the depth we'll be diving.

I need something reasonably quick and very secure, in SS.

  • I'm pretty ignorant about inflatables, but I personally have a habit of overlooking the obvious sometimes. If you have a rigid deck, is there a suitable place where you can install a cleat?

  • I found these two, both stainless steel. I have no idea how the first one works. What do you think?

that first one would be awesome if iit worked, and the second ive seen before but i imagine ud have the same issue as thee quick link

  • I ordered both of them. I think the threading on this one may not be so fine as on the quick link, maybe it will rust less.

What happens is that the line will run over the tubes and chafe them.

  • There are some RIB forums where I see that they glue a heavy duty rubber chafing patch to the front or they glue a rubber channel/guide for the rope.

  • That will be the next thing to try.

The other thing is that up in the bow I have storage hatches. The fiberglass above them is obviously not as thick as the hull. I'm wondering if it's strong enough to support a cleat even with some backing from underneath.

Dan I can't find the thread that had images of your boat?

  • Dan, I have two suggestions...one is to tie SS links into the rope to make the area of attachment stronger and easier to clip to, the second is to just make a locking slide for the carabeaner hook...just a bit of ss tubing that slides over the connection between the solid portion and the opening.

since the hook will always be oriented down, you would need to manually slide the tube up the shank, open the hook, move/remove the link/knot and then close the hook and allow the tube to slide down...it should prevent false openings and be very quick to work even one handed.

  • I canceled the order for the two previous snaps. I was at Sailorman today looking for a piece for my gun rack and found this snap. It looks very secure to me and is rated for weight high above my application. You have to pull on the pin for it to open, and it snaps closed with one hand. Pricey at $50 but I'm happy with it.
