Unscented conditioner for putting on wetsuits

  • In general I don't like artificial scents to point of irritability, I feel bombarded with them. Consider the number of different scents we subject ourselves to; soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, deodorant, aftershave or cologne, and for some still more after; hair gel or spray, moisturizing lotion etc etc. Add to that everyone else who you have to deal with in close proximity and their stuff which is different than yours. On top of that I feel the most inappropriate time and place for these scents is in the sea environment. When you use hair conditioner mixed with water to put on a wetsuit you'll get constant whiffs of the conditioner.

I already use unscented soap which is readily available, so I set out to find unscented conditioner which proved to be harder. The local supermarket (Publix) nor the pharmacy (Walgreens) had any. I searched online and found a few products targeted specifically to someone like me, they are categorized as unscented or fragrance free. My next stop was at a local natural/health food market, Whole Foods. I was very pleased that they had a few choices of conditioner which really didn't smell like anything, of which I selected the cheapest for $3.

I started figuring out the appropriate amount of the unscented conditioner to mix with water. It seemed to me that in the end with this conditioner, I had to use more of it than the regular conditioner I was using previously to achieve the slippery feeling, lets say about a table spoon to a spray bottle full of water. I sprayed the inside of the wetsuit liberally and it went on and came off easily, and there was no scent.

  • Thanks Dan, I just switched back to my Omer 5mm and it was a little tight around the waist,
I may have to add two teaspoons.
    Cheers, Don

  • hahaha...good find Dan...I like whole foods and fresh market a lot...but they are usually more expensive for everything...the 365 brand stuff is great..thanks for sharing

    i like to spear fish

  • can this thing work with a regular wet suit , the last time I wore mine it got kind of unconfortable because it doesn't slide.

  • I never used an open cell suit until my prototype freedivingspearfishing suit so I DIDN'T have any experience with wet suit lubrication until 30 dives ago. Now I know how important the lub is to comfort and function of an open celled suit.
1.The very first lub I tried was Johnson's No More Tears Shampoo and Conditioner. It lubed the suit nice, smelled nicer than "a cucumber melon douche when wearing your wetsuit?" But after 2 days I began to itch and have a slight rash. The rash and itching went on for 2-3 days until I switched to another lub. :(
    2. The second lub I tried was the "Omer Oil For Wetsuits". If you don't hate Omer products before you buy this 250ml lub for $20. you will after you try this Omer lub. I used almost 25% of the bottle the first day trying to get my suit slippery enough to get on. :angry5:
    3. Now I'm using "Sauve Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner" from Walmart. Now my suit slips on great and remains the perfect slipperyness for the whole day and is still slippery when I take the suit off after 10 hours spearin. Is a whole lot cheaper than the Omer crap. And no rash or itching. And I smell like a coconut douche bag when I wear my suit :laughing3:
    Hope this helps

  • Someone on this forum recommended the Suave conditioner to me as well (I'm sorry for not giving credit for the suggestion to he who deserves it, but I just can't remember). I have really sensitive skin, but this Suave stuff doesn't make me itch at all. Good call.

  • hau and marco.. I went to walmart and buy some suave coconut conditioner....never felt my wetsuit so comfortable in my life plus when I finished the dive I smelled like a bit*%...:D...never going out diving again without that..
