• I've been thinking of getting a pneumatic gun for poking fish inside of wrecks. I'm not really sure what size or model to get. I crawl into some pretty tight places. It will mostly be killing big sheepshead and tog at close range, but I'm gonna rig it with a reel in case a cobia swims by. Are pneumatics a huge pain in the arse? Not looking to invest a lot of money, just wanna get something that will work. I know a lot of you florida guys shoot pneumatics so any advice would be great. Thanks guys!:toast:

    Yes I sold mine Don.

Hatteras, the pneumatic gun for your application is a Mares Cyrano 700 (70cm hole gun). However even a Cyrano 970 is probably not enough for a cobia at longer range. For your application I would choose a 70-80cm wood gun with two 16mm bands. Check out these threads.

  • Buy a sten that shoots a 8mm shaft. I use 100cm sten for my hole gun and my secondary gun because the holes we shoot in aren't that tight. You will only need one spring stainless steel shaft for the life of the gun especially if you trim down the shaft. I prefer to shoot pneumatics when the shaft barely comes out of muzzle far enough where the flopper will open. This makes the gun better balanced. This gun could easily take down a cobia or AJ if they swam by you while you were looking in holes. You can also grab the shaft while the fish is thrashing and the spear will still be straight. A 100cm pneumatic with a very short shaft is not a long gun but packs a ton of power. Ive shot through the head of a 44 lb cubera, 40lb amberjack, and 60lb cobia with that gun.

  • Thanks guys. I've got a 90cm Freedivers SA railgun rigged with a 3/4 band (bad ass gun by the way) that is my go to gun for the inshore stuff, but it's freekin cumbersome when you crawl inside my favorite wreck. I've also tried a 75cm Sporasub band gun that I would use if a RA shaft would fit in the mech. The shafts it shoots are small and bend super easy plus I've had shots bounce right off of fish's heads with it.

Greekdiver thanks for the advice. Def gonna check the Sten out.

Oh yeah... Just how loud is a pneumatic when fired?:bouncinboobs:

  • It's not that loud for the diver using it, but the "thunk" of the piston hitting the muzzle can be heard by another diver 100 yards away. I was stalking a fish when my partner shot his pneumatic at least 50 yards away and my fish flinched and took off. The sound is unmistakable and will alert you to the presence of other divers in the area that you didn't know about, if you're in a region where pneumatics are popular. The bottom line about pneumatic is that they're a good choice when all you have access to are poorly made band guns. Having the possibility of making a wood band gun there's no question about what I would choose.

Are you referring to a Mares Sten or some other brand gun and also do you think some sort of dry barrel kit will be needed for this gun and if so which one do you think will be best?

I'm sure it shoots good. I haven't looked at the spear it has though. Can you use any spear you want or easy to modify? I'm sure the OMER one will cost a lot of money.

Its louder than a bandgun but that wont affect how many fish you will kill. Remember a 100cm pneumatic is a much smaller gun than a 100cm bandgun.

I will post a picture of my sten when i get a chance.

Just the mares sten. It fires 8mm shaft. A dry barrel is not necessary because you will be firing close. A dry barrel is good for long guns or a gun that you want to shoot far. I use my Mares sten pneumatic for close range. I could make it shoot farther by adding a kit to it and use mono for shooting line, but i love the way i have it.

If Davie or I shoot a Cobia, Cubera or a big AJ, i prefer to grab that gun from the boat and put a second shot into the fish. I also use that gun when a fish holes up.

If Davie reads this, i'm sure he can comment and compare the power of the 100cm Sten.

It's coming with two, but I may still fab my own.

  • It's pretty effective and easy to load, fish give up after 1 shot. They shaft may be 8mm but the big ass slide ring ramming then entering the skull is what probably shocks the fish most.
