I'd like to secure my boat trailer with a strong chain. These Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit hex chains seem to be popular. I wonder how cut resistant they really are. Does anyone have personal experience? Ideally I'd like to just buy a length of the same quality chain instead of paying triple for nylon sleeve with a brand name on it. Does anyone know where I can buy chain like this in the same way other chain is sold?

McDonald Hardware on 84th St west of US1. They carry a case hardened chain (with the hex links) that is impossible to cut with a bolt cutter, you have to use a grinder or a chop saw. I worked there when I was going to highschool, turst me when I tell you that a bolt cutter doesn't work. I just don't remember if it had any galvanizing coating or something to retard the rusting process.

Thanks Adrian. I'll go there tomorrow, or rather call them first. I hope they kept stocking it, I don't know when you saw it last. You mentioned case hardened and I've seen that term used to describe these security chains, what does case hardened actually mean?

While I'm at it what do you guys think of this U lock, they're located in Miami http://www.ulockup.com/home.html price is $40.

. . . You mentioned case hardened and I've seen that term used to describe these security chains, what does case hardened actually mean?
Materials that are very hard, are typically very brittle as well. Case hardening is a heat treatment process that hardens the outside surface to impart cut or wear resistance, while leaving the inside of the piece relatively ductile.
It is often used on things like the teeth of a gear. In that case, you want the surface to resist wear, but you don't want the entire tooth to be brittle or it may break off. Also common on locks and such, where the hardened outside surface is resistant to hack saws, while the relatively ductile core keeps a thief from just smashing it with a hammer.

Thanks Jeff.

If your gonna use the U lock make sure you also put some type of lug nut locks like these

Thanks.

Only if Repo man comes for those wheels, they won't be getting squirted with water from a hose, but cold jelly from a tube:@.:hi:

Owwe!
I went to Macdonald hardware. They didn't have the hex chain but they had a case hardened square chain for $17/ft :@ Since I need 4ft it makes sense to buy this one and get a lock for the same price http://cgi.ebay.com/OnGuard-Ma…ain_0?hash=item4398ebfd4a

Are you attaching the other end to your dog?
A regular chain might work combined with a coupler lock and hitch lock on the front. After someone sees all they have to go through they'll decide to look for easier pickings.
You can also install a fake security camera. They go for around $15.

Did you look for the same chain at Home Depot?
-
Yes, home depot has nothing close.
Davie, I'm already using a coupler lock.
I'm looking for a hitch lock but the pin on my hitch is an odd size and I haven't been able to find one.
-
what do you plan on attaching the chain to?
-
Is that bad the situation in Florida??!!
