Hello from Long Island, NY!

  • Hi,
I stumbled on this forum while searching for Dan's Pursuit fins... I'm from Long Island, NY and green with envy when thinking about the Florida guys who get to dive almost year around. Most of my dives are in 30 - 60 ft and in 8 - 15ft viz for 30-50lb stripers, in bad current (strong tidal current going over reefs that raise from 150ft to 30ft).

More than half of my dives I'm alone - either from the shore or from my jetski. The other half are from boats with a few close friends.

Gear-wise I am a strong believer in rail-guns, but recently I'm going over on the dark side of mid-handles: I started using a short Riffe M1 last year, and this year I got a mid-handle hybrid. I'm still struggling to find the perfect fins and so far I settled on the Nemo #5 (went through Sporasub Carbon and C4 Mustang Flap 40 before this, plus a bunch of plastic).

...not a big fan of long introductions, but looking forward for some great threads!

  • Welcome.

Hope the storm the last few days wasn't that bad to you. Flooding has been crazy. I'm in Queens.

  • WELCOME STEFAN,Glad you found us.I'm in the central coast of ca.now, but born and raised in ASTORIA,NEW YORK.

  • Welcome Stefan. You were using extremely stiff fins. What´s your weight?

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

I walk at an average of 240 for 6' tall - definitely overweight... I tried plenty of fins but at over $400 a pop it is getting expensive to keep trying. I had high hopes for the C4 40, but I find them soft as wet noodles. The trick with the #5 is not to even think about overpowering them or bending them at 90 degrees - it will not happen. But put the right pressure on them and they will take you through the nastiest stuff you can imagine - including swimming big fish up when the reel jams.

  • Welcome lidiver, I'm a ex Connecticut yankee but F the cold. I used to dive Montauk Pt when I was
a kid. All the guys here are great, and have a lot of experience and are just plain fun.
    Looking forward to your posts.:thumbsup2:
