Manowar?
Looks more like a shrimp than a lobster to me but I can't tell for sure.
It was walking around in an inch of water going up and under rocks if that helps.
If it is a lobster I have never seen or heard of us having the lob's such as these in FL.
Interesting. I'd like to know what it is.
Ok, its a snapping shrimp aka pistol shrimp. Here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpheidae
Pistol shrimp and juvi manowar. I seen the shrimp on discovery channel, something about applying it for future weapons. There were literally thousands of manowars like that of off ft. lauderdale last week.
I think the pistol shrimp are the cracking noises you hear on the reef.
Yeah alot of manowars over here also. The birds have been going crazy eatting them.
WOW a pistol shrimp!!! That is awesome, I also saw the discovery show on them. It's amazing what they can do. I had no idea we had them in Florida. Guess I'm lucky it wasn't a bigger one since they can mess a persons finger up.
yup, theyre "pistol" claw the fatter one creates a cavitation bubble thats like the heat of the sun. never put one in a fish tank though because they keep u awake all night popping away.
many of them have a symbiotic relationship with litte gobies, the shrimp is allmost blind so he keeps one antenae on the fish at all times and the fish will sugnal through body movments if danger is coming. in return the goby gets a nice burrow made by the shrimp (none of the local types do this though)
sorry to ramble but i love this shat
p.s dont worry about pistol shrimps hurting ya,, we have mantis shrimps here that are the ones to fear.
How come the snapping doesn't harm the goby?
What's the danger of the mantis shrimp?
the shrimp dont snap at the gobys, and i dont kknow how bad the snap is any way ive held them in my hand when snapping and you dont realy feeel it
an mantis shrimp can take ur finger down to the bone .. and they dont pinch like a crab they just lash out real fast
nice Steven, interesting info
Thanks Steven.
you guys ever seen a mantis shrimp run by when laying on the bottom lookin for fish? i feel like it happens pretty often
I don't have that much bottom time where I usually dive to see it happen.
