Great Whites

  • You guys in Cali have White's and we here in Florida have Bull's, both can be a threat for sure, but, we have to live with them if we wish to dive. I had a small 51/2ft bull approach me yesterday and stuck out my gun and he came close to me, but just turned and left. So far so good but they can be a pest sometimes. Sharks in murky waters are a scary thought though for sure O2.

  • Ha! Darren and I have a trip planned for Santa Barbara Island in two weeks. I really don't give a crap about it so long as people don't talk about it too much. Enough talk might unnerve me. I figure its just part of life. Darren who is the trip leader may think different though. It should be interesting.

  • Don't be pussies! Everyone knows they are there and you could be picked, but the chances are minimal. Best not to talk about it at all if you ask me. Just one of those things that goes unsaid in my circle.

I'd be more concerened about the bulls. I dove CA for 20 years and only the last year I was there did I see 2 big sharks (makos) and both were from the boat and far from shore.

At least out here in the Gulf, I expect to see sharks; and pretty much have on almost every trip. I get really nervous diving dirty water here, cause I KNOW they are around. In CA, it was never even a thought because the chances were so slim.

  • It has been my experience that, even with larger sharks, that if they are staying around and getting close that if I act as the aggressor and swim at them they scare off. Kinda of unnerving when it is a bigger one; but I have had it work even with a good size hammer. With gun, fins, arms stretched, and me being 6'3" I look about 15' long to a shark. The only time I get really weary is in low vis, especially with hurt and bleeding fish in the water. I saw a white in the gulf when diving the middle grounds once and that about gave me a f'ing heart attack. One and only white I ever saw and she was big. But I 100% agree, respect them as top predators and that we are in their home hunting what they also eat. With respect comes more safety; and not talking about them helps with the nerves for sure.

  • dude seeing a white shark...wow...intense...im always thinking of the cali divers or near white sharks area how they do it haha...i want to hear some ws stories

If I had any stories I would only tell them to non-divers. I think it could make fellow spearos and myself thinking of them a little:crazy:

I dove with several sharks in Hawaii, and a couple small blue sharks out here. But that was in really clean water. I am not really concerned about sharks in clear water. You can see them and read their behavior (to a point). If they are acting aggressive, it is time to get out of the water. If they are being casual, then I would probably stay in, but I would be keeping an eye on the shark.

I haven't heard any good reports of YT yet. Hopefully things change by time we leave.

I'm not a big fan of WS storys unless one of my friends tells me face to face or on the mobile, letting me know they saw one at a spot I dive allot. I've been within 15 feet of 2 and have a Life Guard float with 2''
deep holes, but that's all I want to say. I hope I'm wearing my a Go Pro the next time I swim with one though.

    Cheers, Don
