Spearfishing carp

  • I'm with Tinu. If someone asks something (at least in this forum), there are no double senses involved.

My question was simple and direct. Now I'm clear.

Thanks for taking the time to explain as I have never spearfished in fresh water and have no friggin idea of which species are dible, plague or just fun to shoot.

A bad day fishing is ALWAYS better than a good day at work.

  • What's wrong with killing for fun ? Your outside , in nature, shooting something....the payoff ? It brought joy. That simple .That's the only reason I don't shoot prarie dogs....the military burned me out on range time, sniper school thoroughly finished the job on burn-out, so shooting prarie dogs reminds me too much of all of that....and I haven't found a use for the ones blown to smithereens except to confirm that a .17 HMR is one of the greatest rifle configs of this century.

That being said, part of my "fun" is finding utilization . Carp provide dog food, fertilizer, trotline and trapline bait....I shoot 'em and thro 'em in the freezer .

As far as edibility; the only way I have had them yet that I liked was pickled.

  • !!:cool2:
again, the he question here came up if someone shooting a fish and not eating it ?
the first answer was the fish was shot just for fun.
if that answer would have been left alone like that, i would consider to talk about fishing ethics.
but that answer already had been clearified with a further explanation. case closed for me.:thumbsup2:

If you kill insects or rodents in your house do you eat them? Probably not....are they edible? Yes, everything is can be consumed but I don't feel bad about killing a cockroach in my house and not eating it just because they eat them in Thailand.

There have been electric fences installed to avoid the carps from entering some palces,
but they have been found beyond the fences, its going to get really ungly in a few years,
the ships carring invasive species from one continent to the next is a big deal.

The National Geographic Channel has been running an hour long documentary on the silver carp invasion. Crazy stuff.

  • I think of carp as a preview of the hogs we have here in FL....

I don't think there is any solution but for man's involvement and I would rather have individual hunters than widespread efforts doing the regulations...we all know that spraying, or fencing or any BIG solution has more un-intended side effects on other species and habitats...hunters are more sensitive and likely to use the catch in a responsible and respectful way.

just like the coyotes, man has created a situation that now is beyond natures ability to regulate without losing a lot of other species...to me, that means man must be proactive in the preservation and regulation.

All of that said, if the regulation is not soundly based in science and well executed, it can be as big a problem

    i like to spear fish

  • Eeeeyep....
