• i would also shoot an email to titotigershark@hotmail.com

he is a miami gun builder who started making amazing wood barrels for euro handles and muzzles and has evolved to all sorts of guns. He is a great builder and a really cool guy. When I met him he recognized my name from a mutual friend who had sold me his old tito gun. Tito not only remembered that I had purchased it, he knew the gun in his head and told me if i ever needed anything for it to just give him a shout...plus the gun is awesome.

I urge you to dive with as many guns as possible but given the weather and your desire to pool test and master your gun before the season, youdont have that luxury.

A custom or homebuilt gun will be perfect for you, as long as you know what you want. I agree with all the recommendation in this thread too. lots of good makers listed and the pipe guns are great. I have a 90 and a 120 Rob Allen and, even thought they are metal, they float without the shaft and shoot straight with no fuss.

I would also add ken from deathsticks as another maker with a good reputation

    i like to spear fish

  • I have often though about makeing my own gun, but i dont know if i have the right equipment... I have some basic stuff, alot if it was made for knife makeing actually, but i dont know if any could be transfered to makeing a gun. But what the hell, i would be willing to try it out.

  • well there you go, a thousand opinions and no closer deciding between riffes and wongs. its the way the "what gun do i get" discussion always goes lol.

:laughing3: Exactly! That's why I tried all I could until I found what I like and what works best.

By the way Nick there is a sweet 55" GR hybrid in the "for sale" section for $775. Beautiful piece of wood.

If you have the patience to build knifes, you can build a nice gun just the way you want. Just be careful before you go down the path.... It can be very very addictive and pleasurable, sometimes leading to sleepless nights and divorce, even before the mistress called the sea gets her hands on you.:D;)

  • ok, sooo yea, sdeisen, you were right. I'm not one step closer than i was 3 days ago.... Ughhh. But i do have some new ideas. Ok lets take a look at everything and see if im missing ANYTHING. Custom speargun would ne awesome, but i learned how to make knifes from a master, and im still learning. Know any builders in North Carolina? If that's a no, then the best way to learn is the hard way. If i wanted a gun i got suggestions from everything. Rob Allen, seasniper, deathstick, Aimrites, Big Daddy, Koah, and Phil(freediving form). Not to mention my Riffe and Wong... Rob Allen, i don't think im into the whole railgun thing. Sorry... Aimrites is a no probably, along with Koah. Seasniper, Deathstick and Big Daddy i like the look. But looks are the last thing i need to be considering. Does anyone have one? How do they shoot? Warranty? Was it made with quality in mind or quantity? I'm trying to keep my mind open to everything, as yall know more than me. The problem I just ran into, everyone i know owns a riffe , A.B biller or a JBL :/

  • i dove with a few people a couple weeks ago and one guy had two d. wong guns and everyone was having a hard time getting used to them, claiming they shot high or low, but thats not the guns fault im sure just the rigging or the user most likely, at the blue wild i looked at a lot of deathsticks and i really like the handle hes using. i doubt you can go wrong quality wise because there are a lot of old riffes, deathsticks and wongs still around, and anything around that makes it to being old really is a testament to quality.

  • I have a SeaSniper Reef Pro and a Wong 50 Hybrid. I just sold a 57 Gil Striker. The SS is a great reef gun. It has an enclosed track, lots of power and is really accurate. For hunting reefs in SoCal and in the Sea of Cortez it is awesome! The 50 Wong is very similar to the SS. I doesn't have an emclosed track, but the band pull is identical. The Wong in rear handle plus, not a true mid handle but I can spin it in the water really quickly to track a fish.

The Gil Striker is a big heavy piece of wood. It shot like a tomohawk missle, super accurate, super powerful. It was just too heavy and cumbursome for my type of hunting.

  • I'm going to go way out on a limb here, Darrel is a great guy and Jay and I have been friends since 1980 and many here may know I build my own personal guns, but if I was in the custom gun market for a speargun I would pass down to my kid, Phil Herranen is the guy I would call. I looked very closely and handled his fine piece at the Ocean Freedom event and it was a 9.99 in terms of fit, weight and finish, along with the fact his builds are so personal to the shooters needs.
