How do I improve my Breath-Hold?

  • I was wondering what can I do to improve my breath-hold and dive time? Cardio works in the Gym? Pool exercises? Any advice on what yall do to train you lungs for better breath-holds? Also, I have trouble removing my snorkel mouthpiece after making a breath-hold. Any advice on a successful removal on the snorkel mouthpiece?

  • The million dollar question.

    Best answer: Practice :D

there is no substitute for experience but some people swear by O2/CO2 tables. I personally have no experience with them. Another option if take a freediving class. They are expensive but the information you learn is supposed to be invaluable. (not to mention all the safety tips that you will learn) Ill be taking one this summer.

    good luck

  • Just pratice and espeacially try controlled breathing. Some weeks ago i read the book
"The 4 Hour Body" and it has a special chapter which i guarantee it helps you to hold your breath
at least twice as much as you can now. Ofcorse it doesnt help to improve your breath hold for long time but you have to try it yourself. Maybe i can post an extract or the chapter.

    Cheers

  • My son swam competitively in high school and showed me how they bend backwards with arms extended to fully inflate their lungs. I tried that and it helped.
But I also learned something that was a little disheartening, as far as my potential for improvement.
We had some balloons and each took in as much air as we could into our lungs, then inflated balloons. My son weighs about 140, I weigh 170. He could blow balloons up about 20-25% more full than I could. It seems that some are just genetically predisposed to breath holding capacity.
It's not everything. A high metabolic rate could suck up the extra oxygen faster. But having bigger lung to body ratio must be a real plus.

  • doing dynamic in a pool when u dont have easy access to the oceanl helps alot and often is the most convenient way to pracctice "freediving". i think any breath hold exercise is useless unless you do so with some level of frequency, though

  • it really is more of a mental thing than most people realize. It requires a lot of relaxation . Practice will help you learn to relax and burn less oxygen it will also help you learn how to relax thru the inherent tension that comes with the breath hold- ie; contractions. You can practice dry statics or pool training. Pool training is hard mentally because you know you can breathe whenever you want. It takes mental fortitude to conquer the premature urge to breathe. You must do this with a buddy and only in the pool, not in the ocean ,where there are too many factors you cannot control. Ultimately, pool training will help your diving for breath hold and conditioning.

    Thanks DonPaul!
We have a lot of work to do at Aida but we are getting there! World championships coming up this year in the Mediterranean. Should be fun.
I'll start you training with me on hypercapnic tables. Much more productive than hypoxic training.

  • Is evidence that Yoga practice helps with freediving at several levels like flexibility of the ribcage, peace of mind and breathing. Is some particular Yoga breathing exercises called Pranayama Breathing that help improve breath holding capacity, just google it. As mentioned in the post is O2/CO2 tables in several websites as well as iPhone apps that help you with those. I attended the FreeDiving classes by Performance FreeDiving and it certainly helps.

  • Breath of fire. Yoga rules

that's from Kundalini yoga-- good practice for breath hold. Sara Campbell, women's world record holder for depth,is a Kundalini instructor-- obviously works well for her . she dives to 100m and she is a petite little blond.
