• Just got out of the water. They are out there, go get them.

Went out for a afternoon shore dive with a buddy. We were greeted with calm seas and 10-15' of vis. Water temp was low to mid 60s. Lots of dines out there with mackeral being the main culprit of action. Blake got his PB calico at around 5lbs and I got a PW (personal worst) WSB at two inches over legal. Looked much bigger underwater, but now I know. Saw a few more at around the same size as my WSB, but no biggies. Good luck if you go.

And no pictures. I am too ashamed of the baby killer I am at this point...

  • I wish I could fillet the big ones that fast. It takes me multiple hours just to fillet a big c-bass and clean up all the mess it creates.

P.S. did you get the weight? I'm guessing around 9 or 10lbs. Nice catch btw. A lot of people do the same thing with halibut, catching a ton that are only an inch or two away from legal and no one complains about that.

On the plus side, your fish probably has a lot less mercury in it than a huge wsb :D

  • Hahaha true about the mercury..

I didn't get a weight, but it was pretty solid. I was guessing in the 10# range.

  • Just hit central Laguna. Worked it hard for 3 hrs with nothing to show besides sand in my ears. Got in at Moss and worked north to Main beach and back south

Vis- 10-12' blue, but alot of particulate in the water
Waves- 2-3ft with some surface chop from the wind
    Wind- 5-10knts
    Current- Stiff from the south
Life- Tons of bait out in the water, a lot of really nice sized calicos in the 5lb+ range

Only saw two very small wsb in the 15" range in shallow, heard some croaks, but very faint.

Headed out again tomorrow before Mother's Day festivities..

  • Beat the sun yesterday and was rewarded well. Didn't come home with anything but mental pictures and memories. Got schooled by 100 - 200 wsb all in the 20" range less than 3 feet away from me, with one maybe legal, but I didn't want anything to do with 'maybe' anymore.

    Vis - 10' mas o menos
    Wind- nada
    Swell- 2-3' occ 4 '

  • Nice fish. So, what's the deal with mercury? Is a lie? Someone who explains it...

As fish grow here in our polluted waters, they acquire mercury in their muscles by eating smaller fish contaminated with mercury. As fish grow, the mercury doesn't get excreted, so it piles up. So in essence a smaller fish would acquire less mercury than a larger fish because it has eaten less contaminated fish.
