Im tired of using the same old cheap knifes that dull out after a few fish, what are you guys using to clean and fillet your fish that wont break the bank?

Dexter Russel. Average cost is about $27 per blade.
I have the 7" serrated tiger blade for cutting through the skin on the snapper and other tough scaled fish, the 8" breaking knife and the 10" breaking knife for filleting and the 10 diamond rod for maintaining an edge.
-
Yep. Dexter russell 10" butcher knife and a nice boning knife whose name escapes me now. Very popular
-
I have a couple of dexter's but my favorite for filleting fish is one old Rapala with the wood handle. They come in three sizes and I have them all but use the larger one more.

This is what i use as well

As you can see from the above responses, Dexter Russels are a long time standby.
Another good choice are Forschners. I use a 8" breaking for most of my filleting & 6" boning for trimming work.

i use a machete hahahahaha:D

Forschners!!! that's the name of my boning knives...they and DR...they get the job done
-
I have a Dexter Russel tiger edge. That thing cuts through everything: Shark skin, Triggerfish skin, bones, everything!
For filletting, a good knife with a good sharpening stone is essential. It doesn't matter how good a knife is, it need to be sharpened eventually. Dexter Russels are also good and reasonable priced. Get the rubberized grip ones (white).

Correct. Marco is correct. Spend the extra five bucks for the sani-safe grip. Adds years to the life of the blade. And is much easier to hold and grip wet

The top right is my vote. Forschners have nicer steel than the DR. I like having the sheath as a combo as well.
-
I agree. DR just seems to be much more available around here.
-
i like the setup Jim posted..had I seen that before I got my knives I would have gone that route for my boning knife...I still like the heaft and feel of the DR butcher knife for breaking down fish...it just cuts what I want it to.

This is a good thread so my contribution to it is.. to change the title to knives instead of knifes
Unless it was misspelled on purpose for ultra cool effect, in which case let me know and I'll change it back.

I think I'll pick that one up. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you use their sharpener?
-
I'd skip the sharpener as its much cheaper almost anywhere else. You might also want to consider a longer knife for bass. I have one for togs and one for big bass.
-
Get a big (large) knife. It's better to spend the extra bucks in something that is good for all your catch.
And get a sharpener.
