  • wow watching videos like this and reading about this stuff makes me feel really lucky to not like in cali- free from hippies and crazies like that. No one would dare protest that blatantly in FL about that kind of stuff.

Great job on standing up for what's right! Keep up the good work and please keep the video's coming!

  • I am a conservationist and am studying fisheries management and marine biology so on the surface I understand the concern of the seal activist but like was mentioned before these people give us a bad name as they go about things in a counter-productive way that only serves to muddy the real issue. Many of those people seem to be heavily misinformed as to the behaviors of those animals. True, the Harbor Seal does hunt at night but they mostly hunt during the daylight hours and most nocturnal hunting would be done further out and at deeper depths. And if the seal population felt threatened they would simply vacate the beach and move to a different location. But while preserving the seal population is necessary for a stable ecology I feel that the sharing of this beach wouldn't negatively impact that. If this was their last numbers or place they can seek refuge then I would support the beach closure but that area has other places they can relocate to; and they will if they feel threatened. I have dealt with extremist groups like those 2 and have known people in both groups and can say that they represent only the fringe of the animal rights population. It's unfortunate that the Sea Shepard people are there and acting in such a manner as I am a supporter of their cause against whaling (though I do have some issues with their methodology); but this to me lessens their credibility in some ways. I would actually love to be there and chat with these people to see how much they really know about the animals as opposed to just getting angry and worked up to feel better about themselves. Uninformed, self-righteous protest aren't going to help anyone. Unless they take this to court or gain political backing their efforts are going to be for not anyway. And like was said, as divers we probably have more of a connection with the ocean than most of those people.

Love the videos, that must be amazing to swim with a seal like that. Cheers guys.

  • Shallow with these people it is no longer about the seals. They make a lot of money with
That booth with no permit to be there. Also there is a large rock that is less than 200 yards away that is a seal reserve and less than a 1/4 mile past that is a marine reserve for a few miles which is perfect for seals and harbor seals. The harbor seals don't need another beach they just need sealwatch to go away.

  • My first photo upload here.

The distance is about 1.5 miles to the South and 0.5 miles to the north on the photo. The red areas are existing/future reserves. The new reserve to the south will go into effect with the new year.

  • It does not show seal rock which is small but it is set aside for the seals. Besides Seals natural habitat does not consist of lying on the sand. Thanks Justin.

Justin how much coastline is on the preserve to the north and the south of our little sliver of coast?

  • Using measurements on Google Earth, La Jolla has about 6 miles of coastline. Four miles are devoted to reserves and two miles to fishing. This really concentrates fishing in a very small area.

However, we have to remember that the la jolla coast is mostly rocky. Where there is sand, typically the waves pound with a pretty wicked shore break (not like the places I have been in FL). There is a reason beaches are named "boomers" and "wipeout". That is why the breakwall was designed. It was designed for fishing and for children. Personally, I wouldn't have the same problem if the seals hauled out on almost any other beach in La Jolla. This one is special.

  • oh man its almost that time again huh, well i guess ill have to bring the bbq out and get sum fish and lobster ready. i have a weird schedule and can take almost any day off so if anyone wants to head down there from the temecula area hit me up. cant wait to get back there again.

    Awesome! Can't wait!

  • A couple of updates for people:

    1. The new lifeguard tower project is moving forward. They are in the middle of the CEQA process right now and they are soliciting public comments. These comments should be related to whether or not there was adequate environmental study of the project and whether the design of the new tower is good or bad. These comments should not say, "I like the project" or "get rid of the seals". Instead they should be focused on, "Please maintain a minimum 10 foot access to the so-called "baja road" and sea wall" or "Please maintain access to the existing stairs to the beach". The information can be found here:http://docs.sandiego.gov/cityb…52010%252006%25202011.pdf

    2. We are planning on attending the Coastal Commission Meeting when they are in San Diego next week. We will be providing non-agenda public comment about the ongoing harrassment and intimidation experienced by beach goers which has the effect of limiting access. If anyone is interested in joining us, please send me a pm. The dates and location are as follows:
    NOVEMBER 2-4, 2011

    Oceanside City Council Chambers
    300 North Coast Hwy.
    Oceanside, CA 92054

    3. The City has found a way to circumvent its own laws and procedures to take the formerly dead year-round rope barrier proposal to the Coastal Commission. For those who don't know, this is what the environmentalists sued about this year when the City of San Diego Planning Commission killed the proposal after significant lobbying by the community. The lawsuit failed to get the rope put back up but now they are getting another bite at the apple. The Coastal Commission will hear (at a date yet to be determined) and decide on the proposal for a year round rope in perpetuity. This is a VERY important hearing for us to show up to so I will keep you posted. This rope is an effective tool that the enviros use to keep people off the beach. That is beside the environmental damage caused by the rope. We have pulled signs and rope out of the ocean many times. It has gotten caught on rocks and on the seals several times and it helps to prevent regular cleaning of the beach.

I will keep everyone posted. We need your help!

  • Thanks for the update Spearhunter, and everone else involved in this important matter.

  • The rope will go back up on dec. 15. Until then, we have relative peace. The year-round rope proposal will go to the planning commission in the next few months. We will let you know when we know.

  • APRL, ALF, SEALWATCH, FOS and ANDREA and DOROTA this is for you and PETA might as well throw in the blue ribbon task force, city of laguna, and the top people of the ...
